We currently have 6 FT Fire Fighters, Fire chief, 12 PT Fire Fighters and 6 on call Fire fighters. 7 Full-Time Firefighters including Chief Sipel;
Full-Time Firefighters are members of IAFF Local 1914, in addition on call and PT Firefighters make an additional 18.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

READ CAREFULLY

1. An applicant must be a citizen of the United States or, if not a United States citizen, must be in the U.S. on a visa permitting applicant to work. (Documentary evidence of citizenship must submitted at the time of application.)

2. An applicant must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of filing application. (Applicant must submit documentary evidence of his or her date of birth at the time of filing application.)

3. An applicant must be a high school graduate or, if not, must produce a high school equivalency diploma or certificate. (Documentary evidence of education must be submitted at the time of filing application.)

4. An applicant must have completed an Firefighter 1 with Pro Board certification or its equivalent and also possess a current certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a First Responder, EMR or EMT.

5. To qualify for veteran's preference points, veterans must submit a copy of their DD 214 at the time of application. (Documentary evidence of the aforementioned requirements must be submitted at the time of application.)

6. An applicant must take and pass a physical agility test conducted by the Commission. A photo I.D. is required for admittance to the agility test. Applicants who pass the physical agility test will continue onto the written examination. A photo I.D. is required for admittance to the written examination. An applicant must score seventy percent (75%) or higher to pass the written exam. Applicants shall be notified by the Commission as to the date, time and location of the physical agility and written examination testing.

7. Applicants passing the physical agility testing and written examination shall proceed to the oral examination. Applicants shall be graded on a 100-point scale with a score of seventy percent (75%) or higher necessary for passing. Applicants shall be notified by the Commission as to the date, time, and location for the oral examination.

8. An applicant must be of good moral character and habits.

9. An appointee to the position of firefighter must pass medical and psychological examinations by practicing physicians of the Borough’s choice and a background check.
Such examinations to be arranged for and paid for by the Borough.

10. An appointee shall establish residency within a five (5) mile radius of the Wilson Borough Municipal Building, provided that such residence is within the Commonwealth
of Pennsylvania within one (1) year of appointment.

11. An applicant must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess an operator’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the time of appointment.

12. Any applicant, who shall make false or misleading statements and is placed upon the eligible list, vacates any rights to be retained on the list or the Department if so named
and agrees to accept dismissal for cause.

13. Any person appointed to a position in the Fire Department after certification from an eligibility list shall serve a probationary period of one (1) year. At any time during the
probationary period, the appointee may be dismissed for just cause. If, at the close of such probationary term. The conduct or capacity of the probationer has not been satisfactory to the appointing body, the probationer shall be notified, in writing that he or she will not receive permanent appointment, whereupon his employment shall cease; otherwise, retention in the service shall be equivalent to his permanent appointment.

14. The eligibility list shall continue for a period of two (2) years.

Applications will be available at Borough Hall located at 2040 Hay Terrace, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. Borough of Wilson Civil Service
The Borough of Wilson will be offering a civil service exam for the position of full-time firefighter. Applicants must be 21 years of age. Probationary firefighters’ starting salary is $69,485 with full benefits. Applications, additional qualifications, and details of the selection process may be obtained at the Municipal Building, 2040 Hay Terrace, during the hours of 8:30am and 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Completed applications and a $35.00 non-refundable application fee must be returned no later than 4:00 pm on Friday, May 31, 2024. All applicants must have reached their twenty-first (21st) birthday before the deadline for submitting completed applications. Firefighters shall reside within five (5) miles of the Borough Municipal building within twelve (12) months of appointment. The following must also be included along with a completed application. 1. A check or money order payable to the Borough of Wilson for $35.00 2. A copy of the applicant’s high school diploma 3. A copy of applicant’s Firefighter 1 pro-board certification 4. A copy of applicant’s current Pennsylvania EMT/EMR card 5. To qualify for veteran's preference points, veterans must submit a copy of their DD 214 at the time of application. (Documentary evidence of the aforementioned requirements must be submitted at the time of application.) Civil service testing for the position of Firefighter in the Borough of Wilson. The examination for firefighters will consist of a written and an oral examination which will be graded on a one hundred (100) point scale with the written examination representing seventy-five percent (75%) of the final score and the oral examination representing twenty-five percent (25%) of the final score. In addition, each applicant will undergo a physical fitness test and a background investigation. This test and investigation will be graded on a pass/fail basis for every applicant. After an applicant has been extended an offer of employment, the final appointment shall be contingent upon the applicant passing a physical and psychological examination. 1. A timed physical agility test that will be graded on a pass/fail basis. 2. All applicants who have passed the physical agility test will then move on to a written examination. The written exam will be graded on a one hundred (100)-point scale, applicants must score seventy five percent (75%) or above to continue in the application process. Applicants scoring less than seventy five percent (75%) or not obtaining one of the 30 highest scores will be rejected. The written exam will count towards seventy five percent (75%) of the applicant’s total score. 3. All applicants attaining seventy five percent (75%) and tying at the thirtieth (30th) highest score will be considered as passing and shall proceed to the oral examination. 4. The oral examination which will be graded on a 100-point scale with a score of seventy five percent (75%) or higher necessary for passing. The oral examination shall involve questioning the applicant on how he would handle situations relevant to fire department work. Pursuant to the Veteran's Preference Act, 51Pa. Cons. Stat. 7101et seq., any applicant for the position of firefighter who qualifies as a "soldier; under this Act, shall receive an additional ten (10) points on top of their total score if that applicant successfully concludes the requirements under Section 4.1, 4.4, 4.5, 4.7, and 4.8.
