The federal government, during the series of meetings in August 1851 at Tansy Point, sought to remove and relocate the tribes east of the Cascades and to take title to their lands. The tribes stood firm, and declared they wouldn’t leave the place where their ancestors are buried.
They were able to renegotiate 13 treaties, which allowed the tribes to continue living on ancestral land, although they were forced to cede much of it. Congress never ratified the treaties because the government's intent to remove the Indians was not realized.

The Snohomish River is a river in Snohomish County, Washington, formed by the confluence of the Skykomish and Snoqualmie rivers near Monroe. It flows northwest entering Port Gardner Bay, part of Puget Sound, between Everett and Marysville. The Pilchuck River is its main tributary and joins the river at Snohomish. The river system drains the west side of the Cascade Mountains from Snoqualmie Pass to north of Stevens Pass.

The Columbia River (Upper Chinook: Wimahl or Wimal; Sahaptin: Nch’i-Wàna or Nchi wana; Sinixt dialect swah'netk'qhu) is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest region of North America.The river forms in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. It flows northwest and then south into the U.S. state of Washington, then turns west to form most of the border between Washington and the state of Oregon before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. The river is 1,243 miles (2,000 kilometers) long, and its largest tributary is the Snake River. Its drainage basin is roughly the size of France and extends into seven states of the United States and one Canadian province. The fourth-largest river in the United States by flow, the Columbia has the greatest flow of any river into the eastern Pacific.

The Chehalis River is a major river in the U.S. state of Washington, draining a large portion of the state's southwestern region before emptying into Grays Harbor, a broad estuary connected to the Pacific Ocean. Unlike many rivers in Washington that flow directly from the Cascade Mountains to the sea, the Chehalis follows a distinctive winding route, traveling eastward from its headwaters before turning north and then curving west toward the coast.
