🚫🔥 MANDATORY SUMMER BURN BAN IN GEORGIA 🔥🚫

Effective May 1 through September 30, the State of Georgia enforces its annual summer burn ban, prohibiting the open burning of yard and land-clearing debris in 54 designated counties, primarily in and around Metro Atlanta, Macon, and Augusta. This seasonal restriction helps protect air quality during the warmer months.

🔎 Key Details:

• Dates: May 1 – September 30 (annually)
• Applies To: 54 counties in North and Central Georgia
• Prohibited: Burning of leaves, tree limbs, and yard debris
• Allowed: Small recreational fires (campfires/cooking fires) in a contained pit or ring, no larger than 3x3 feet, and not used for debris disposal
• Always Illegal: Burning household garbage, plastics, or treated lumber

⚠️ Safety & Legal Requirements:

• Local Rules Apply: While state notification isn’t required for burning natural vegetation outside the ban period, residents must follow all local ordinances. (Putnam County follows State rules for outdoor burning.)
• Clearance: Fires must be at least 25 feet from woodlands and 50 feet from structures
• Supervision: A water source must be readily available
• Time Restrictions: Burning is only allowed between sunrise and sunset

🚨 Burn Ban Exceptions:

Some activities are exempt, including:
▪ Agricultural burning
▪ Forestry prescribed burning*
▪ Campfires and barbecues
▪ Firefighter training (with proper permits)
▪ Operation of open flame equipment
▪ Explosive disposal (per federal safety regulations)

Note: Prescribed burning is not allowed in the 19-county Metro Atlanta non-attainment area.

📢 Important Reminder:

Failure to comply with the burn ban may result in fines and penalties.

The annual summer burn ban begins tomorrow May 1, 2026 and will be in effect until October 1, 2026.
Even with the recent rain our local fire threat conditions remain high. Although campfires and outdoor cooking are not prohibited, they remain a serious threat. Prior to engaging in these activities please consider the consequences and if you must please prepare yourself to protect yourself and your surroundings from the unintended spread of fire. The results could be devastating.

🚫 Annual Summer Burn Ban Begins May 1

The Georgia Environmental Protection Division’s annual summer burn ban goes into effect tomorrow for 54 counties, primarily in and around metro Atlanta.

This seasonal ban is in place each year to help protect air quality during the summer months and will remain in effect through October 1.

⚠️ What this means:
➡️ Open burning is not permitted in the affected counties during this time
➡️ The ban is separate from current wildfire-related restrictions in other parts of the state

If you live in or near metro Atlanta, be sure to check if your county is included and plan accordingly.
