It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a ... butterfly?

Monarchs are on the move to Mexico for the winter. They'll travel about 50 miles a day, sometimes catching a ride on thermal air currents, to complete the 3,000-mile journey!

Here's how you can be a trail angel along their epic migration:

🌸Plant a pollinator garden with milkweed and late-blooming perennials like asters and goldenrods to fuel next year's journey.

💀Avoid spraying insecticides, especially on plants that will flower in the fall.

💧Add a butterfly watering area to your garden. Place a shallow dish of water on the ground with some decorative stones for the monarchs to land on while they take a sip.

Stop spraying pesticides to control mosquitos because mosquito spray kills all insects, including bees, butterflies, dragonflies, fireflies, etc.
Use the bucket method instead.
It kills mosquito larvae, and it doesn't harm bees, butterflies or anything else.
This method is recommended by entomologist Doug Tallamy, author of Bringing Nature Home and Nature's Best Hope.

If you have small kids or grandkids, put chickenwire over the bucket for safety reasons.

We are having our monthly work party at the Arboretum in Eatontown and it's garlic mustard season, so we will be pulling any garlic mustard in addition to any vines in the area.

Garlic Mustard
This plant spreads its seeds in the wind and gains a foothold in fields and forests by emerging earlier in spring than many native plants. By the time native species are ready to grow, garlic mustard has blocked their sunlight and outcompeted them for moisture and vital nutrients.

🌷 It is almost Spring, and it's a great time to think about wildlife. Birds are migrating to our area to start families, as well as monarch butterflies, that fly many miles to start the next generation here in Eatontown as well as across the United States. That is, if they have the right habitat to do so. 🦋🌿

🏡 Come to our Open House to learn what you can do to be sure the birds, butterflies and other pollinators have what they need to survive and thrive!

🗓 When: Saturday, March 18, 2023
🕙 10AM - Noon
📍 Where: Community Center in Eatontown
