Welcome to Wednesday, DART! Underage drinking remains a significant concern, with numerous potential consequences for young individuals. Despite legal restrictions, many adolescents still engage in alcohol consumption. Teaching young people about the risks associated with alcohol, as well as providing them with alternative activities, can help deter underage drinking. Additionally, open communication between parents and children can play a crucial role in preventing alcohol misuse among adolescents.

Hey, DART Coalition! Happy March! March is Brain Injury Awareness Month. To kick off Brain Injury Awareness Month, Kim Myers of the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jersey presented to the General Coalition on the bidirectional relationship of traumatic brain injury and substance misuse. There are two types of brain injury: traumatic brain injury (TBI) and acquired brain injury. Substances like alcohol, drugs and even certain prescription medications can impair judgment, coordination, and cognitive function, making individuals more prone to accidents or injuries that can have a long-lasting impact on the brain. Substance misuse and brain injury increase the negative effects each condition has on the brain.

Happy Thursday! DART is finishing up its February Awareness campaign centered around American Heart Month, and the effects of substance use on the cardiovascular system. Opioids can cause respiratory depression, leading to decreased oxygen levels in the blood, which can put extra strain on the heart. Chronic opioid use had been linked to an increased risk of developing conditions such as a heart attack or congestive heart failure. Opioid overdose can result in cardiac arrest as well.
