South Pierce Fire and Rescue

South Pierce Fire and Rescue The official page of South Pierce Fire & Rescue. January 1, 2009 marked the beginning of South Pierce Fire and Rescue District No. 17.

Pierce County Fire District No. 17 was formed in 1953 by the founders of the Roy Fire Department, which was established in 1939. Pierce County Fire District No. 15 was established on June 24, 1952, and later, in 1999, was officially renamed South Pierce Fire and Rescue. January 2007, during a combined meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners for both Districts No. 15 and No. 17, it was decided t

o pursue a plan to consolidate and merge the two districts. Progress of the plan outlined moved well ahead of schedule and in August of 2008, through voter support, the proposition to merge both districts was approved. Today, South Pierce Fire and Rescue provides fire and EMS services to a combined population of more than 22,000 citizens in an area covering 138 square miles, answering approximately 3,000 calls per year. The fire department maintains a fleet of vehicles including engines, engine tenders/tenders, utility vehicles, and brush trucks. Operating out of 8 stations, South Pierce Fire and Rescue is a combination department consisting of 31 career firefighters, approximately 20 volunteer firefighter/EMTs, and supplemented by three administrative staff. The Department is responsible for fire suppression (structural), wild land response, first response at the basic life support (BLS) level, advanced life support (ALS) response, evaluation and transport, vehicular extrication and rescue, hazardous materials response at the operations level, and public education.

Every day, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals respond to 911 calls, provide medical care, and support patients in critical moments. About 75% of calls in our community are EMS-related. During EMS Week (May 17–23), we thank the paramedics and EMTs who serve and help save lives.

Wildfires are already occurring across the region. Residents can help reduce wildfire risk around their properties by following simple tips:

• Clean leaves and pine needles from roofs and gutters
• Move firewood, propane tanks, and other combustible materials away from structures
• Remove dead grass, brush, branches, and yard debris, and keep driveways and access routes clear of overgrown vegetation

These steps can help slow fire spread, improve safety, and better protect homes during hot, dry, and windy conditions.

A very exciting project is underway at Eatonville School District to strengthen cardiac emergency response across school campuses.

Today South Pierce Fire and Rescue crews joined Eatonville High School’s Community Day, teaching students hands-on CPR and how to respond in emergencies. Crews also gave students and community members a look inside a medic unit— and even the school mascot joined in on CPR practice.

Juliann, with the Kids Heart Challenge and American Heart Association, presented a special gift. Thanks to a generous $25,000 investment from Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, Eatonville students and staff will be better equipped for emergency readiness.

We’re proud to partner with our community to empower the next generation with life-saving skills.

South Pierce Fire and Rescue responded this morning to assist with a horse rescue. The horse was stuck in a creek in the 2000 block of 336th Street South in Roy.

The horse was reported to be stressed and unable to get out on its own. With the support of our mutual aid partner, Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, crews worked together to safely complete the rescue.

The horse has been transferred to veterinary care and is currently being evaluated and treated.

We appreciate the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved in ensuring a safe and successful outcome.
