Could Eau Claire have its own riverwalk district?

The Redevelopment Authority has approved moving forward with an RFP process to hire a consultant to help answer that question. The proposed Riverwalk District Feasibility Study will take a closer look at the river corridor from the Lake Street area through Water Street toward Clairemont Avenue, exploring opportunities for better river access, recreation, connectivity, business activity, and future redevelopment.

This is still an early step, and no riverwalk route or design has been decided. Once a consultant is selected, they'll dig into what's actually feasible and work with nearby neighborhoods, businesses, property owners, and the broader community to help shape potential concepts.

If you've been out on the trails this summer, be sure to take our survey!

After measuring the economic impact of Eau Claire's trail system in 2024, our division has partnered with Visit Eau Claire, Explore Menomonie, and GO Chippewa County on another study focused on the Chippewa Valley's state trail system.

Better understanding how the trails are used regionally will help:
πŸ”— Improve connectivity between trails, communities, and destinations
πŸ› οΈ Guide future improvements based on how people actually use the system
πŸ“ Identify gaps and opportunities across the regional trail network
πŸ“Š Measure their impact on recreation, tourism, and our local economy

To help guide the next era of future investment and redevelopment in Eau Claire, City Council has approved two new redevelopment districts proposed by the City's Redevelopment Authority.

While the redevelopment plans don't authorize any specific projects, they do establish a long-term roadmap the Redevelopment Authority can use to proactively address underutilized properties, support neighborhood revitalization, and prepare sites for reinvestment when opportunities within these newly-defined areas come up.

Last week, City Council appointed the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, officially kicking off Eau Claire's Comprehensive Plan update.

The Comprehensive Plan is one of the City's most important long-range planning documents, guiding decisions about land use, housing, transportation, parks, utilities, economic development, and more. In our division, it provides the framework our staff uses to support business growth, prepare development sites, and plan for future investment.

Next up: community engagement. Over the coming months, look out for opportunities to share your ideas and help shape Eau Claire's next 10–20 years.

The Eau Claire Sculpture Tour is back for its 16th season with 120+ pieces to see. 🎨

As the nation's largest outdoor sculpture tour, it's a great example of how the arts contribute to growing our local economy. Public art encourages both locals and tourists to explore different parts of the city, spend more time visiting local businesses, and experience Eau Claire in a way that's unique to our community.

πŸ—οΈ Project Update: The Washington

One of Eau Claire's most unique developments reached another milestone last week.

Developers and construction crews celebrated the topping out of Building Three, marking the completion of its structural frame. Planned to open next spring, the project will bring 200 new housing units to the Shawtown area while preserving and renovating the historic former Mount Washington facility, which has served the community in various roles since the 1930s.

Beyond new housing, the development will include amenities like coworking space, a fitness center, outdoor gathering areas, a pool and roof deck, and commercial space, creating a destination that complements the surrounding neighborhood while giving one of Eau Claire's most recognizable historic properties a new purpose.
