They are popping up just about everywhere. Lithium-Ion rechargeable batteries come in many sizes big and small and store a large amount of energy. They can be found in every day devices such as cars, smartphones, tablets, lawn and power tools, toys, e-cigarettes, and laptops and many more. Lithium-Ion batteries are used for fun and enjoyment helping make things easier but come with a risk that everyone should know about. Great care should be use with devices with these batteries. Damaged or not used correctly, lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire, or even explode. We encourage you to be informed about your devices and follow the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach to all Lithium-Ion battery powered items.

Buy Only Listed Products
When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery, take time to research it. Look for a stamp from a nationally recognized testing lab on the packaging and product, which means that it meets important safety standards.

Charge Devices Safely
Stop charging the device immediately if you notice a change in color or shape, an odor, heat, leaking, or odd noises. Move the device away from anything flammable (such as outside on the driveway or sidewalk) if possible, to do so safely. Call 9-1-1 if you notice any smoke or flames. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge it. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. If you need a new charger, buy one from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t charge it under a pillow, on a bed, or on a couch. This could cause a fire. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.

Recycle Batteries Responsibly
Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could catch fire. Recycling your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location is the best option for disposal.

Today’s storms have caused damage in a few northern communities. We are asking if you or someone you know received storm damage to a home to please contact the Cambria County 911 non-emergency 814-472-2072. Let the dispatcher know of the damage and leave contact information. County Emergency Management will contact you tomorrow and arrange a visit to assess damages. Also we would like to remind anyone that may need to use a generator due to power outages to use safely *see safety photo*

⚠️ MISSING ENDANGERED PERSON ADVISORY: PA State Police Ebensburg, Cambria County, PA
The PA State Police Ebensburg, Cambria County Pennsylvania, is searching for Willard Thompson, 67-year-old white male described as 5 ft 8 in, 150 lbs., white hair and beard, blue eyes, wearing black jeans and a black coat.
W. Thompson was last seen walking in the area of Frankstown Road, Croyle Township, Cambria County on July 17, 2026 at approximately 5:00 PM. Thompson may have sought assistance from a passing motorist operating a silver in color vehicle. Police believe this person may be at special risk of harm or injury, or may be confused.
Anyone with information on Willard Thompson is asked to contact police immediately by calling 911 or the PA State Police Ebensburg at 814-472-1653.
