We are proud to recognize Matthew Varner on his recent promotion to Captain at the Cambria County Prison.

During his time as a Lieutenant, Captain Varner proved that he could be counted on when it mattered most. He approached the position with confidence, worked through difficult situations, supported his staff, and continued to grow as a leader. The job he did as a Lieutenant made it clear that he was ready for the next level of responsibility.

Captain is a very different role, and it comes with the opportunity to help shape not only a shift, but the direction and culture of the entire facility. We are excited to see the ideas, leadership, and perspective Captain Varner brings to that responsibility.

We are proud to recognize Captain Wysong and congratulate him on his promotion to Captain at the Cambria County Prison.

While Captain Wysong has already been serving in this role for several months, we wanted to wait until his official command portrait and uniform were completed before formally recognizing the promotion.

Being selected to serve as a Captain is about far more than a new rank. It means being entrusted with the responsibility of helping lead an entire correctional operation, supporting the men and women working on every shift, and being someone others can rely on when difficult decisions have to be made.

Captain Wysong has earned that trust.
As we continue working to strengthen the leadership of the Cambria County Prison and build the kind of organization we want this facility to be, having experienced and dependable people in these positions matters tremendously.

We are proud to officially recognize Lieutenant Jason Dunbar on his promotion with the Cambria County Prison.

Lieutenant Dunbar was promoted several months ago, but we held off on making the formal announcement while we waited for his new Lieutenant uniform to arrive so we could recognize the accomplishment with the official portrait it deserved.

Lieutenant Dunbar has earned this opportunity through his hard work, professionalism, and commitment to the facility, his fellow officers, and the responsibilities that come with leadership. Stepping into a supervisory role carries a new level of responsibility, and he has already begun demonstrating his ability to take on that challenge.

It was great to welcome former Captain and former Counselor Brian Bracken back to the Cambria County Prison today.

Brian stopped in to donate a meaningful piece of our institution’s history to our current Inmate Services Department — a framed article he wrote documenting the beginning of the Inmate Services Program at the Cambria County Prison.

Programs like Inmate Services do not simply appear overnight. They are built by people who recognize a need, put in the work, and create something that continues long after their own time at the prison has ended. Brian was part of that history, and it is great to see something he helped establish continue to grow and serve our inmate population today.

The framed article will now have a home within our Inmate Services Department as a reminder of where the program began, the people who helped build it, and how far it has come.

Thank you, Brian, for stopping by, for preserving an important part of our history, and for the contributions you made to the Cambria County Prison throughout your career.

During Probation Officers Week, the Cambria County Prison proudly recognizes and supports our brothers and sisters at Cambria County Probation.

Probation officers play a critical role in our criminal justice system. Their work extends far beyond supervision. They hold individuals accountable, connect them with resources, support successful reentry, protect our communities, and work every day to help break the cycle of incarceration.

Much of their work happens quietly and without recognition, but its impact is felt throughout Cambria County. We are grateful for their professionalism, dedication, and continued partnership.

We want to take a moment to recognize Officer Wertz for an incredible commitment to giving back to others.

For the past 10 years, Officer Wertz has been involved in organizing a charity golf event dedicated to helping those in need in his own personal time. The event originally benefited the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society before the decision was made to bring that support closer to home and begin benefiting Windber Hospice.

For Officer Wertz, supporting Windber Hospice is deeply personal. The organization was there for his family, providing care and support to both his mother and his brother before they passed away.

Continuing this event is more than just raising money for a worthy cause. It is a way to give back to an organization that was there during some of his family's most difficult moments and to help ensure other families in our community receive that same care and compassion.

We are proud to have people like Officer Wertz as part of the Cambria County Prison family—people who understand that service to others does not end when the uniform comes off.

Thank you, Officer Wertz, for 10 years of giving back and making a difference in the lives of others.
