A huge win for wild pig eradication efforts at Land Between the Lakes!

USDA APHIS Wildlife Services recently completed an extended season of aerial wild pig removal operations at Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area (LBL), removing 1,802 wild pigs from the Kentucky-Tennessee area.

Using helicopters equipped with FLIR (thermal imaging) technology and aerial removal equipment, crews significantly reduced the wild pig population. Follow-up surveys showed an estimated 90% decrease in wild pig numbers!

Winter removal efforts occurred from January through March 2026. The focus was primarily on female pigs, which travel in groups called sounders, that are easier to locate from the air than lone individuals.

Trapping efforts will continue until all remaining wild pigs are removed. USDA APHIS Wildlife Services, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Land Between the Lakes remain committed to the complete eradication of wild pigs at LBL and throughout Kentucky.

With wild pig numbers greatly reduced, hunters should see improved opportunities for deer and turkey hunting throughout LBL! Reducing wild pig populations helps protect native wildlife, conserve habitat, and preserve outdoor recreation opportunities for future generations.

As always, if you see something, say something at http://squealonpigs.com

Today, we congratulated a member of our family who has decided to hang up his badge for good and be the grandfather and great grandfather he enjoys being. He may also throw in a fishing trip every now and then.

Deputy Perry Glore has been a public servant for many years. He is a former Crittenden County Sheriff and a former Florida Deputy Sheriff, having served for over 20 years in the sunshine state before coming back home to Kentucky.

We brought him out of retirement to help with our Court Security Division and he did a fine job serving the citizens of Lyon County. Join us in thanking CSO Deputy Glore for his service and wish him all the best as he enjoys his deserving rest!!

Following the retirement of Deputy Oliver last month our patrol division had a vacancy which required finding the next team member to fill those big shoes. Several years ago in my state police days, I had the pleasure of welcoming a young Luke Fraley as an intern at Kentucky State Police Post 1. Luke’s interest in public service was refreshing. He genuinely soaked up as much knowledge as he could in that short amount of time while he considered whether to start a career in law enforcement.

Later, Luke joined the US Navy and served our nation as a Sailor. Most recently, he worked as a deputy sheriff in a neighboring county, and after we received a referral about this candidate, he approached the opportunity cautiously and methodically. He asked to come to our agency, meet our staff, and ride along with our deputies. That’s how he will approach decision making as our newest Deputy Sheriff. While we appreciate all those who applied for this vacancy, we equally wish them the best in their future endeavors. Help us give a warm Lyon County welcome to Luke!

Special thanks to Judge Matthew Schalk for administering the oath of office today in Lyon District Court.

The first four boys from Lyon County headed to the Sheriff’s Ranch camp today for a fun filled week. Thanks to Deputies Glore and York for driving them down. Thanks again to our sponsors who provided this experience free of charge to these young men. If you have a boy ages 8 to 11 who would like to attend the Ranch this summer, please contact us.

Next week it’s the girls turn. We still have spots available next week and later this summer. There is still time to pick up your application and have it turned in by Friday of this week before camp starts next Monday. Call us at 270.388.2311 with any questions.

It takes less than 2 seconds to fasten your seat belt. Not wearing a seat belt at night makes you three times more likely to be in a fatal collision, if you are in an accident. Please buckle up. Every trip. Every time.
