It's with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Active Life Member and Fire Commisioner John Wicka. John was the rock and staple of our fire department. May you rest in peace brother John. We will take it from here.

BREAKING NEWS: Santa Claus is coming to town!!! The Eden Fire Department and Eden's Emergency Service Organizations will be hosting Santa for a tour thru town on December 19th starting at 3pm. The route is still being finalized and we will continue to provide details as they develop!

Good evening, this is Melissa Hartman, Eden Town Supervisor. Governor Cuomo has issued an executive order beginning Sunday, March 22 at 8pm, for New York State residents to stay at home. This includes 100% of the workforce, unless you are deemed an essential employee. Essential businesses include grocery stores, food distributors, pharmacies, healthcare workers and medical suppliers. A more extensive list can be found at https://esd.ny.gov/. We ask that our residents adhere to these orders to protect essential workers and first responders. You will be able to leave your homes for food, medical supplies, pharmaceuticals, pet supplies, or take to care of family members who are unable to care for themselves. You are free to go outside, take a walk, or play with your children. But we ask that you maintain a safe distance from anyone outside of your immediate family.
These are extraordinary times for the Town of Eden, New York State, the United States of America, and the entire world. Because of this, we need to take extraordinary measures. Uncertainty can cause confusion and panic. We want you to know that our Town will persevere. We will work together to ensure the well-being of our friends and neighbors. Our amazing network of first responders and emergency services has been working hard over the last few weeks in preparation.
Additionally, we are asking everyone to take the time to check on your neighbors, especially seniors. If any resident needs food or pharmaceuticals and can’t leave home, or if you are an essential employee and in need of childcare, please call us at 716-992-3408 for assistance. If you suspect that you have COVID – 19 (coronavirus), please call your doctor. If you require emergency assistance, please call 911.
Unfortunately, I do not have any information regarding the duration of this order. I ask that we do our part to follow the guidelines provided and stay in our homes. For updates, please refer to our town website and pages. If there is an urgent matter, we will continue to utilize the code red system. Please take care of yourselves.

As first responders we have a duty to remain current and trained on this constantly changing pandemic which makes the limiting of gatherings interesting. The Town of Eden Emergency Management team has been in constant contact and we are updating our responders with any pertinent information as it becomes available.
The Public Safety Dispatch Centers have screening questions when processing EMS calls to help guide the responders if a patient we are responding to is a possible COVID-19 patient. We have procedures in place for responding to these calls that ensure our responders remain safe and healthy and our equipment can return in service as quickly as possible after each incident and proper cleaning.
To help yourself remain educated on this ever changing situation, follow the Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) and Center for Disease Control (CDC) pages and websites.

2/24/20 East Eden hosted Stop the Bleed training, put on by the Eden Emergency Squad. Members of East Eden Fire, Eden Fire, and Eden Police learned how to stop life threatening bleeding through packing a wound and applying a tourniquet.
We have already been out on three calls tonight, trust us when we tell you that staying home is the better option! Stay safe everyone!

If you are coming to the Eden Corn Fest, you can find the Eden Police in a mobile command vehicle for Emergency Services, located near the car port of the Eden American Legion. If you are looking for Eden EMS, they are in the little loop building, located at the little loop football field.
“My name is Lynn, I am a 46 year old Paramedic with the Eden Emergency and Rescue Squad. Please take a few minutes and read my story, it could happen to anyone and could have turned out very differently.
On Tuesday, June 25, 2019 I was volunteering with the Emergency Squad. When I transferred care to the staff at ECMC, I started having a stroke. The adrenaline, the heat of the moment and the thought of, no this can’t be happening to me, all played a part in me not admitting that I was having a stroke. My partners and I cleaned up and left the hospital en route back to Eden.
We were eastbound on Route 33, chatting with each other as we approached the highway. The left side of my mouth wasn’t moving, my left side of my face was tingling from the side of my eye down to my jaw. I started experiencing these symptoms while I was in the ER, transferring my patient. The symptoms were not going away. As we entered the thruway, I looked at Chris (driving, EMT) and told him there is something wrong. I told him I couldn’t move the left side of my mouth and the left side of my face was tingling. Chris was merging into traffic and asked me to clarify what I had told him. So I repeated it. At the next closest exit, Walden Ave, he exited the thruway, pulled to a safe place, and stopped. I questioned and protested the whole time. I wanted him to continue driving back to Eden. I wasn’t considering my long term health. He told me to get in the back of the ambulance. The rest of the crew had no idea why we had stopped. The crew jumped into action when Chris told them to start a stroke scale and get vitals on me.
Decisions on the best hospital for me were made with me giving my friends a hard time and not being the best, most cooperative patient. They are and were the most professional, compassionate, caring, and well-trained first responders. Because of their sound decisions, they had me at the hospital within 30 minutes of the onset of symptoms. I received needed tests and medications within an hour of the first symptoms. Due to our members’ training, recognition of stroke symptoms, and their quick and decisive actions, I have NO deficits. Once cleared by my doctors, in a few weeks, I will be back to all my activities including the Eden Emergency and Rescue Squad.
I wanted my story publicized because I want people to know that strokes can happen to anyone at any time. If in doubt, call 9-1-1 or seek immediate attention. Time is extremely important when the hospitals consider drug administration to counteract the symptoms of a stroke.”
Signs and Symptoms of Stroke
* Sudden weakness, paralysis or numbness
of the face, arm and leg on one or both
sides of the body.
* Sudden loss of speech or difficulty speaking or understanding speech.
* Sudden dimness or loss of vision, particularly in only one eye.
* Sudden unexplained dizziness (especially when associated with other neurologic symptoms), unsteadiness or sudden falls.
* Sudden severe headache and/or loss of consciousness.
If any of these symptoms are present, CALL 9-1-1 and seek medical help immediately.

Eden’s Hometown Heroes Banners are up. We would like to thank Newell Faulkner American Legion Post 880, their Commander James Blidy, the Sons of the American Legion, Karen Ferguson, Bob Reed, Robin Evenhouse, Eden Highway – including Ron Maggs, Billy Sickau and Ellen Preischel. A special thanks to the Captain John J. Levulis Memorial Foundation for their generation donation of $3,000 that served as the seed money for the project as well as the numerous Eden residents and businesses that donated. Applications for the 2020 hometown Heroes Project are now available at the American Legion, Shur Fine and the Eden Town Clerk’s Office. Applications will be due February 1, 2020. We are very proud to honor Eden’s heroes.
