🚫🔥 STATEWIDE BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🔥🚫

Due to increased wildfire risk and ongoing dry conditions, a statewide burn ban has been issued across all 100 counties beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 and will remain in effect until further notice.

All open burning is prohibited—this includes yard debris, brush piles, and any previously permitted burns. No new burning permits will be issued during this time.

⚠️ Important reminders:
• Violations can result in fines and court costs
• You may be held responsible for firefighting expenses if your fire gets out of control
• Fires within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling are still be allowed until the Rockingham County Fire Marshal deems it necessary to issue a local burn ban.

With dry conditions and wildfire risk on the rise, it’s critical everyone does their part to prevent new fires. Local fire departments and law enforcement are assisting with enforcement.

📞 For questions, contact your county ranger or local fire marshal’s office.

🚨 Remember to change your smoke alarm batteries, test and check the date on the alarm! 🚨

♻️If your alarm is 10 years old or older, it needs to be replaced!

There are "10 year" alarms available that do not require changing a battery.

If you have questions or need assistance with alarms, contact your local Fire Department.

Daylight saving time starts this Sunday, March 8th! Use this as a reminder to test your smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed.

We are saddened to announce the passing of retired Firefighter David Watkins.

David began his fire service career as a volunteer with the Shiloh Fire Department, then joining as a volunteer with the Leaksville Fire Department and the City of Eden Fire Department in the early 1990s.

David later went on to work for the Summerfield Fire District for 18 years, where he retired in 2020. David worked his way up to the rank of Captain in Summerfield.

David also served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army National Guard.

Please keep the Watkins family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate this difficult time.

Rest easy Dave, we'll take the watch from here.

🔥 A Night of Fellowship, Service & Celebration 🔥

Yesterday afternoon, the members of the Leaksville Volunteer Fire Department came together to celebrate our team and reflect on an incredible year of service to our community.

📟 By the numbers (so far in 2025):
🚒 401 calls answered
🏅 ISO rating improved to a Class 4

We enjoyed a catered meal, some friendly games, and door prizes generously donated by our amazing local businesses — thank you for always supporting your fire department!

🏆 Member Recognition Highlights:
• Daren Zeller – Most Calls Ran
• Adam Vincent – Most Training Hours Completed (132)
• Adam Vincent, Spencer Loye & Damien Troxell – Lifesaving Award
• James Slaughter – Chief’s Award, for countless hours of dedication both on scene and behind the scenes
• Daren Zeller – Firefighter of the Year, voted on by fellow members

We also took time to recognize our Officers, whose leadership keeps our department running day in and day out — in-house, on scene, at community events, and everywhere in between.

❤️ Finally, we honored the memory of our fallen firefighter and Safety Officer, Danny Wooten. Gone far too soon, Danny’s dedication, sacrifice, and service to our department — and others — will never be forgotten.

Thank you to our community for your continued support. We’re proud to serve Leaksville — today, tomorrow, and always. 🚒💪

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Safety Officer Danny Wooten.

Danny served the citizens of Rockingham County for many years. Danny was an active volunteer for our department. Danny previously served with the City of Eden Fire Department and the Triangle Volunteer Fire Department in Bayboro NC.

As a firefighter, Danny was experienced, consistent, dedicated, and brave. He was a wealth of knowledge, which he freely and generously shared, and was a friend and brother to everyone of us in the fire service. Danny's passing is a tremendous loss to not only the Leaksville Volunteer Fire Department but to all who knew and loved him.

Please keep the Wooten family in your prayers.

Thank you, Danny, we'll take the watch from here.
