The members of the Leaksville Fire Department stand in solid grief alongside the Durham Fire Department following the heartbreaking loss of a fellow firefighter in the line of duty early this morning. We offer our deepest sympathy and prayers to his family, loved ones, and the entire DFD family.

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was changed forever.

At 8:46 a.m., American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

At 9:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.

At 9:37 a.m., American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.

At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower collapsed.

At 10:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after the passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers.

At 10:28 a.m., the North Tower collapsed.

But these times represent more than moments on a clock. They mark the beginning of an unimaginable day of courage, sacrifice, and loss.

As the towers burned, firefighters, officers, EMTs, and paramedics of the FDNY ran toward the buildings. They climbed stairwells as thousands of people descended. They entered a disaster unlike anything they had ever faced, knowing the danger was extraordinary, yet continuing upward to search for and rescue those who were trapped.

343 members of the FDNY made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. They were firefighters, officers, and chaplains who answered the call and never came home. Hundreds more first responders have since died from illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery efforts.

Their sacrifice is a permanent part of the history of the fire service.
We remember the firefighters who climbed the stairs.
We remember the firefighters who carried strangers to safety.
We remember those who entered the towers knowing they might never walk back out.
We remember the EMS personnel, police officers, dispatchers, and countless other first responders who served that day.
And we remember the civilians whose lives were taken far too soon.

To the 343 FDNY members who gave everything on September 11, 2001 — and to every first responder who has suffered or sacrificed in the years since — we remember you. We honor you. We carry your legacy forward.

25 years later, we still remember.
25 years later, we still honor.
25 years later, we still serve.

🎉 Congratulations to the graduates of the Rockingham Community College "Nighttime" Fire Academy, Class #20!! 🎉

Over the last ten months, these individuals put in well over 400 hours of training to become NC Certified Firefighters.

🚫🔥 STATEWIDE BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🔥🚫

Due to increased wildfire risk and ongoing dry conditions, a statewide burn ban has been issued across all 100 counties beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 and will remain in effect until further notice.

All open burning is prohibited—this includes yard debris, brush piles, and any previously permitted burns. No new burning permits will be issued during this time.

⚠️ Important reminders:
• Violations can result in fines and court costs
• You may be held responsible for firefighting expenses if your fire gets out of control
• Fires within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling are still be allowed until the Rockingham County Fire Marshal deems it necessary to issue a local burn ban.

With dry conditions and wildfire risk on the rise, it’s critical everyone does their part to prevent new fires. Local fire departments and law enforcement are assisting with enforcement.

There are "10 year" alarms available that do not require changing a battery.

If you have questions or need assistance with alarms, contact your local Fire Department.

Daylight saving time starts this Sunday, March 8th! Use this as a reminder to test your smoke alarms and replace batteries if needed.
