The Perquimans/Chowan/Gates (PCG) Transfer Station will remain CLOSED for residential and C&D waste. They will continue to

The dog is now back in the custody of the Tri-County Animal Shelter. Chowan County, Chowan Animal Control and the Tri-County Animal Shelter would like to thank the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office as well as Gates County and Perquimans County Animal Control for their assistance today.

COMMUNITY ALERT!
DANGEROUS DOG AT LARGE

Please be advised that on March 5, 2026, a dog contained at the Tri-County Animal Shelter (138 Icaria Rd. Tyner, NC) escaped. Chowan County Animal Control officers along with the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office are actively searching, but at this time the dog has not been located.

The animal in question is described as a female adult Pit Bull Terrier, cropped ears, with a red coat and white patch on the chest. The dog is wearing a faded collar. This dog has demonstrated aggressive behavior toward people and is considered extremely dangerous. Do NOT approach no matter how calm the dog may appear.

The dog is believed to be running at large in the area near or around the Tri County Animal Shelter located at 138 Icaria Rd Tyner, NC.

If you see this dog, please stay inside and keep pets and children secure, do not attempt to capture or interact with the animal, and report sightings right away to local authorities.

Sharing for the Perquimans/Chowan/Gates (PCG) Landfill

The PCG Transfer Station (located in Belvidere) will be closed for repairs beginning at 11:00 am Thursday, March 12, 2026. They anticipate reopening Tuesday, March 17 for normal operations, pending project completion.
During this time they will continue to accept yard waste, concrete/brick, metal and white goods, tires, and properly prepared recyclable materials.
All MSW and C&D waste should be directed to East Carolina Environmental Landfill.
Please check the ARHS page or call the PCG Transfer Station at 252-297-3300 for operation updates.

Inmate Located and Back in Custody
The Chowan County Sheriff's Office is pleased to announce that inmate Charles Babb has been returned to law enforcement custody. This swift resolution was possible thanks to the exceptional cooperation between law enforcement agencies and our vigilant community.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all who assisted in bringing this incident to a close quickly and effectively. Special recognition goes to:
North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation
Edenton Police Department
North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections
Chowan County Emergency Management
Pasquotank County Emergency Management / Fire Department
Our Deputies worked tirelessly throughout the night with these partner agencies to secure the inmate and restore a sense of security to the public we serve.
Moving forward, a full investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances of the escape and to ensure that preventative measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.
We encourage all residents to download the official SHERIFF APP to receive quick and accurate information in the future.

The Chowan County Sheriff’s Office knows that the community is scared at this moment about the inmate that has escaped from the custody of our Detention Center. You should know that all available resources are being used to locate and bring this inmate back into custody quickly. Inmate Charles Edward Babb used a small hand-held edged weapon to force his way out of the jail and into the community. Chowan County Deputies worked tirelessly into the night following up on reports of sightings and using information from our community members. Thank you to those who have tried to help our office bring this inmate to justice. Working together, this incident can and will end effectively. At this time, Charles Babb is still not in custody. Our office continues to look for Charles Babb and we ask that if anyone has any information to please call our office at 252-482-8484. An inmate has escaped from the Chowan County Detention Center (100 Court Street, Edenton, NC). The escape occurred around 8:10 PM this evening.

INDIVIDUAL INFORMATION
The escaped individual should be considered DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY ARMED.
• Name: Charles Edward Babb
• Age: 23
• Description: White male, brown hair, brown eyes.
• Clothing: Last seen wearing an ORANGE JUMPSUIT.
• Distinguishing Mark: Tear drop tattoo under his right eye.
• Last Seen: Near Bridge Turn Exxon in Edenton.

We strongly urge all community members to take these precautions:
1. SECURE: Lock all doors and windows and REMAIN INDOORS.
2. DO NOT APPROACH: Do not attempt to approach or engage the individual.
