Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library

Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library Proudly serving residents of Chowan County and the Pettigrew Regional Library system. The library was housed in the historic Cupola House. Water Street possible.

Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library was founded in 1921 by descendents of William Blount Shepard and William Dossey Pruden, prominent Edenton citizens in the latter part of the nineteenth century. In the 1950s, this library joined the Washington County and Tyrrell County libraries to form the Pettigrew Regional Library, part of North Carolina’s state-wide network of libraries. Over the last fifty year

s each of the libraries has grown significantly. Perquimans County Library joined the regional system in 1977 and Pettigrew Regional Library remains a four-county system. In the 1960s, town and county funding, local donations and a combination of state and federal grants made construction of the current building at 106 W. In the fall of 2006, ground was broken for a major expansion and renovation of Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library, which was completed in August 2008.

🎉 Our Adult Summer Reading Program is off to a sparkling start! ✨📚

This week, participants kicked off the summer by giving old books new life with our Book Bedazzling activity! From glittering covers to creative designs, everyone had a great time transforming books into unique works of art.

💎 Missed this session? Don't worry! Due to the great response and all the fun we had, Book Bedazzling will be returning in future Adult Summer Reading events!

There's still plenty of summer fun ahead, so be sure to join us for upcoming activities, great books, and opportunities to connect with fellow readers.

🦖🍫 What a SWEET day at Shepard Pruden Memorial Library! 🌱

Today's Unearth A Story Summer Reading Program had our young paleontologists digging into delicious Edible Soil Jars! Kids layered chocolate pudding, crushed cookies, and gummy worms to create their very own tasty "soil" while learning about the ground beneath our feet and the world of dinosaurs!

🦕 Dino Fact: Did you know that many dinosaur fossils are discovered in layers of sedimentary rock? These layers were once mud, sand, and soil that slowly buried dinosaur bones millions of years ago, helping preserve them for scientists to discover today!

🌍 Soil Fact: Healthy soil is alive! Just one teaspoon of soil can contain billions of tiny microorganisms that help plants grow, recycle nutrients, and keep our ecosystems healthy.

It was wonderful seeing so many smiling faces getting creative, learning something new, and enjoying a delicious treat!

Our second day of Unearth a Story Summer Reading Program at Shepard Pruden Memorial Library was exciting and filled with fun for everyone!

📚 Storytime with Miss Lee (Ages 0–5) brought smiles, stories, and imagination to our youngest readers.

🎨 Coloring with Luke (Ages 6–12) gave kids a chance to get creative and show off their artistic talents.

📖 Beaded Bookmarks with Erica (Ages 13–17) was a big hit with our teens, who designed colorful, personalized bookmarks to use all summer long.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the first two days of Summer Reading such a success! We can't wait to see what adventures, crafts, and discoveries the rest of the summer has in store.
