⚠️ Community Scam Alert – Please Share ⚠️

The Village has received reports from Edgar residents about suspicious phone calls that appear to be coming from local phone numbers and even the names of neighbors or people they know on Caller ID. However, when the call is answered, it is actually a solicitor asking questions about Medicare.

At this time, we cannot verify whether these callers are legitimate, but we do know that the local phone numbers and names displayed on Caller ID are not the actual callers. This practice, known as caller ID spoofing, allows scammers or telemarketers to make a call appear as though it is coming from someone you know or from a local number.

Please use extra caution:
• Do not provide personal, financial, or Medicare information to an unsolicited caller.
• Do not authorize changes to your Medicare plan over the phone unless you initiated the call and are certain you are speaking with a legitimate representative.
• If you are unsure, hang up and contact Medicare or your insurance provider using a phone number you know is legitimate.

⚠️ Marketplace & Online Purchase Reminder

We also want to remind residents to be cautious when buying or selling items through Facebook Marketplace or other online marketplaces. Scammers often attempt to collect personal or banking information by pretending to be legitimate buyers or sellers.

Please remember:
• Never provide your banking information, debit or credit card numbers, online banking credentials, or other personal financial information to someone you do not know.
• Be cautious if someone asks you to verify a code sent to your phone, pay with gift cards, or use an unfamiliar payment method.
• If a deal seems too good to be true or someone pressures you to act quickly, it is best to walk away.
• Whenever possible, meet in a safe, public location to complete transactions.

Please also check in with family members, friends, and neighbors-especially those who may not use social media and those who are Medicare-eligible-to make sure they are aware of these scams and understand the importance of protecting their personal information.

A familiar name or local phone number on your Caller ID does not always mean the call is actually coming from that person. Staying informed and taking a few extra moments to verify who you are dealing with can go a long way in protecting yourself and your loved ones.

⚠️ Power Outage Update – West side of Edgar

Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) crews are currently en route to Edgar to restore power to areas on the west side of the Village affected by this afternoon's outage.

If you or someone you know is without power and in need of a place to cool down, the Village Hall is open and available as a cooling center until power has been restored.

The Village of Edgar has received a report that an individual has recently been going door-to-door offering to help residents "plan for the future."

At this time, the Village has not issued any door-to-door solicitor permits. If someone comes to your door claiming to represent a business or organization, we encourage you to use caution before sharing any personal or financial information.

Please remember:

🚪 You are never obligated to answer your door or engage with a solicitor.
💳 Never provide personal, banking, or financial information to someone at your door unless you have independently verified who they are.
📋 If someone claims to have a Village-issued solicitation permit, you may ask to see it. At this time, no solicitation permits have been issued by the Village.
👀 If you observe suspicious behavior or believe someone is misrepresenting themselves, please contact the Marathon County Sheriff's Office.

The Village has received a report from a resident in the Brooklyn neighborhood that someone entered an unlocked vehicle over the weekend and stole loose change from inside.
While this appears to be an isolated incident, it serves as a good reminder for everyone to take a few simple precautions to help protect your property:
• 🔒 Always lock your vehicles, even when parked in your driveway.
• 💼 Remove or secure valuables and loose change from your vehicle.
• 🏠 Lock your home, garage, and other outbuildings.
• 💡 Consider leaving exterior lights on or using motion-activated lighting.
If you observe any suspicious or unusual activity in your neighborhood, please report it to the Marathon County Sheriff's Office.

Village of Edgar Announces Hiring of Colleen Handrick as Chief of Edgar Police

The Village of Edgar Board of Trustees is pleased to announce the hiring of Colleen Handrick as the Village's next Chief of Police.
Following discussion in closed session, the Village Board approved the employment agreement for Colleen to serve as Chief of Police for the Village of Edgar. Colleen successfully completed an extensive background investigation conducted with the assistance of the Marathon County Sheriff's Office, as well as a psychological evaluation, as part of the Village's hiring process.

Colleen brings nearly three decades of public safety experience to the Village of Edgar. She is a dedicated public safety leader with 28 years of comprehensive experience in law enforcement, critical incident response, emergency communications, and multi-agency emergency response. Throughout her career, she has developed sustainable community partnerships and implemented proactive outreach programs that enhance public trust, strengthen community relationships, and support public safety objectives.

She brings 18 years of law enforcement experience as a Police Officer, along with Criminal Justice education experience, Communications Specialist experience, and Emergency Management experience. Her diverse public safety background provides a unique combination of leadership, operational knowledge, and community engagement skills that will benefit the Village of Edgar.

Colleen will begin serving the Village immediately in a part-time administrative capacity while completing the educational and certification requirements necessary for Wisconsin law enforcement certification. During this period, she will focus on department administration, policy review, training coordination, community engagement, and operational planning while attending the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Academy. She is currently scheduled to complete the Northcentral Technical College Physical Readiness Test in July and has secured a seat in the Fall 2026 Wisconsin Law Enforcement Academy beginning August 4, 2026. Upon successful completion of the Academy and all certification requirements, which is anticipated in December 2026, Colleen will transition into the full-time role of Chief of Police for the Village of Edgar.

The employment agreement includes training, certification, and probationary requirements designed to support her successful transition into the position and ensure continued professional development. Throughout this process, the Village will continue to work closely with the Marathon County Sheriff's Office to ensure uninterrupted public safety services for residents.

Colleen is recognized for her collaborative leadership style, which empowers others, engages stakeholders, and promotes a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all residents. Her career has been built on service, teamwork, and a commitment to building strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.

After learning of the Village's need for a Police Chief, Colleen made the decision to come out of retirement and return to law enforcement service. The opportunity aligns with a long-term professional goal of serving as the Chief of Police in a small community where she can work directly with residents, businesses, schools, and community organizations to make a positive impact.

Village President Lepak stated, "We are pleased to welcome Colleen to the Village of Edgar. Her extensive public safety experience, leadership abilities, and commitment to community service make her an excellent fit for our community. We look forward to working with her as she leads the future of the Edgar Police Department."

Village Administrator Jennifer Lopez added, "The Village would like to thank the Marathon County Sheriff's Office for their assistance throughout the background investigation process. Recruiting for a small police department can be challenging, and we are excited to have found someone with Colleen's experience, professionalism, and dedication to public service. We look forward to supporting her as she begins this new chapter with the Village of Edgar."

Marathon County Register of Deeds Jenni Lemmer is encouraging property owners to register for a free Land Notification service designed to alert individuals when documents are recorded using their personal name, business name, or a particular parcel identification number.

Once registered for the service, whenever such a document is recorded, the property owner would automatically receive an email or text message alerting them and providing details regarding the type of document and date it was recorded. This early notification allows property owners to quickly review activity related to their property and take prompt action if something appears incorrect or suspicious.

Lemmer explained that while there have not been any fraudulent recordings identified in Marathon County to this point, the service can provide additional information to help property owners.

“Our residents, local realtors, and title companies are doing an excellent job staying alert and raising questions to limit the likelihood that a fraudulent document even makes it to recording,” said Register of Deeds Jenni Lemmer. “And, while the Land Notification service cannot prevent a fraudulent document from being recorded, it does offer the opportunity for increased awareness, helping property owners stay informed about recorded documents using their name, their business name, or their property, so that they can respond quickly to address it.”
