And that’s a wrap for the 2026 summer at South Beach.

Stands are off the beach and” no lifeguards on duty “signs are posted at all entrances. Unfortunately, we have hit that part of the summer when the seasonal staff returns to school. 📓

A huge ‼️ Thank you ‼️to our lifeguards and rangers who joined us for the summer. We especially appreciate the dedication to public safety and enthusiasm they bring each summer.

🚧🚧Unfortunately, Friday August 14th will be the last day we will be able to staff the Bend in the Road beach in Edgartown due to staff heading back to school.“ No Lifeguard on Duty” signs will be posted. Please use caution when entering the water. 🚧🚧

Fortunately, February is right around the corner and we will begin hiring lifeguards and rangers for summer 2027‼️Lifeguard must be 16 years or older to guard open water in Massachusetts and we can assist financially in obtaining the necessary Red Cross certifications required‼️For further details, please call the Park Department office at 508-627-6145. ⛱️🛟⛑️

OSV update: Good news! NP9 to right before NP12 on the Bayside is now open! Plus, a small section of NP11 on the ocean side is open too, but you'll need to access it through the Bayside. Come down and enjoy! We know the limited space has been tough for some, and we really appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation.

Huge shoutout to these 3 incredible lifeguards at South Beach yesterday! There was notice of an individual in the water struggling and these guards saw what was going on and sprung into action! Their professionalism and quick action during the rescue were nothing short of amazing. True heroes keeping our beach safe. Thank you for your dedication and bravery! 🌊🛟

South Beach and Norton are OPEN today! After a few rainy days and yesterday’s closure due to strong currents and wash-over, our amazing Lifeguards, Rangers, and Conservation team have worked hard to ensure the beach is safe and ready for everyone to enjoy. On South Beach, the guards have put out their yellow flags, so please be cautious of the water. Come out, soak up the sun, and have a great time at South Beach and Norton Point!

Yesterday was national life guard appreciation day July 31st, 2026.

It’s was also a busy day for the South Beach lifeguards:

At 12:52 guards at stand 3 (right fork)witnessed a party caught in a rip current.
3 guards quickly entered the water and assisted the party out of the water.
The party was evaluated by EFD/EMS and released

At 1:54 guards on stand 2 (middle south beach) quickly entered to water to assist a party struggling at second break (100 yards) of shore.
The party was brought to shore thanked guards and refused medical treatment.

At 3:50 guards from South Beach were requested as mutual aid by WTFD to Long Point to assist with multiple people in the water, one party believed unresponsive.
3 guards on ATV made the 5 mile trip.
On arrival guards were able to assist responders already on location with extricating the party from the water and transferring to EMS personnel on shore.

To say we at the Parks Department appreciate the guards is an understatement!
This team trains every morning including a mile run and swim along with training scenarios for just what occurred yesterday.

Thank you to our guards & rangers that make South Beach, Norton Point and Bend in the Road Beach safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Norton Point is now open for limited OSV access.

We are excited to announce that Norton Point Beach is open to Over Sand Vehicles with limited access, including limited OSV access on the bay side.

A sincere thank you to the Town of Edgartown Conservation Department and our Coastal Waterbird team for their outstanding work this season. Out of 28 documented piping plover nests, 8 chicks have successfully fledged. It has been a strong year for our beach birds, and their careful monitoring and protection efforts made this opening possible.

Please respect all fencing, signage, and restricted areas. Access remains limited in certain sections to continue protecting any remaining shorebirds.

Thank you for your patience and for helping us balance public access with the protection of these important species.

The Park Commissioners were pleased to attend the Grand Opening Ceremony of the Edgartown School playground this morning followed immediately by the official groundbreaking ceremony for the Robinson Road Recreation Area renovation.

This park wide renovation is 6+ years in the making. The Commissioners would like to thank the Edgartown tax payers & voters as well as the Edgartown Selectboard for their support.
