Serving the community means more than responding to emergencies—it's also about investing in the next generation.

This week, children from Otter Cove Early Learning Summer Camp enjoyed a special visit to Edgewater Fire-Rescue Station 57, where they got an up-close look at the important work our firefighters do every day.

The young visitors learned valuable fire safety lessons, toured the station, explored the fire truck, and even had the chance to use a fire hose. For many, climbing into the truck and meeting the firefighters was the highlight of the day!

Experiences like these help build community connections while teaching children important safety skills in a fun and memorable way.

A big thank you to the firefighters of Station 57 for taking the time to inspire, educate, and create lasting memories for some of Edgewater's youngest residents. You never know—there may have been a few future firefighters in the group!

Keeping Edgewater safe, beautiful, and prepared for the future takes more than equipment—it takes dedicated people.

If you've traveled along SR 442 recently, you may have seen city crews performing ditch mowing and tree trimming throughout the corridor.

This proactive maintenance helps improve roadway visibility, supports the continued function of our stormwater system, and ensures drainage pathways remain clear as we prepare for Florida's rainy season.

This morning, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) officers responded to a report of a distressed manatee near George R. Kennedy Memorial Park, across from City Hall. Upon arrival, they discovered the animal in need was a bird, that had become entangled in discarded fishing line.

Thanks to the quick action of a concerned resident and the expertise of FWC staff, the bird was safely rescued and transported for professional care and rehabilitation.

Birds depend on healthy wetlands and waterways to survive and are considered an important indicator of environmental health. Their presence in our community is a reminder of the rich natural resources that make Edgewater such a special place to live, work, and visit.

This incident also serves as an important reminder that improperly discarded fishing line can have devastating consequences for wildlife. Birds, fish, turtles, and other animals can become entangled, often resulting in serious injury or death.

The City of Edgewater remains committed to protecting our environment, preserving wildlife habitats, and promoting responsible stewardship of our parks, waterways, and natural spaces. Every resident can play a role by properly disposing of fishing line and litter and reporting wildlife in distress when they see it.

We thank the resident who made the call and the FWC team for their swift response and dedication to protecting Florida’s wildlife.

Every household should have an emergency kit ready before hurricane season becomes active. Supplies may become difficult to find once a storm is approaching.

Your emergency kit should include:
✔ Water
✔ Non-perishable food
✔ Medications
✔ Flashlights & batteries
✔ First aid supplies
✔ Important documents
✔ Pet supplies

Plan to have enough supplies for at least 3–7 days.

City Council recently approved funding for the design phase of the Air Park Road and Silver Palm Drive Sidewalk Project, advancing a long-planned initiative to improve pedestrian safety and neighborhood connectivity.

The proposed project would create a continuous sidewalk connection from 30th Street to SR 442 through the Florida Shores community, helping connect residents to schools, parks, neighborhoods, and local businesses while closing a key gap in Edgewater's pedestrian and bicycle network.

Recently, City leaders, planning staff, and economic development representatives toured several Central Florida communities—including Mount Dora, Clermont, and Winter Park—to learn how thoughtful downtown development can support economic growth, local businesses, and quality of life.

The tour provided an opportunity to see firsthand how strategic planning, walkable infrastructure, waterfront investments, and vibrant business districts have helped these communities create destinations where residents and visitors want to gather, shop, dine, and invest.

While every city is unique, the experience offered valuable insights as Edgewater continues to grow and explore opportunities to build on its own strengths and character.
