As many of you are already experiencing tonight, the closure of the Parkway East between the Squirrel Hill Tunnel and Edgewood/Swissvale has officially begun and will remain in place through early August while PennDOT replaces the Commercial Street Bridge.
For Edgewood, this project places our community directly at the western end of one of the region’s largest traffic detours. Residents should expect significantly increased traffic volumes on South Braddock Avenue and surrounding roadways as drivers adjust to new travel patterns over the coming weeks.
The Edgewood Volunteer Fire Department has been preparing for this closure and reviewing response plans, alternate routes, and operational considerations to ensure we continue providing the highest level of service to our community throughout the project.
We ask residents to help us by remaining alert for emergency vehicles, avoiding blocking intersections during heavy traffic periods, and pulling over promptly when emergency vehicles approach. A few seconds and a few feet can make a tremendous difference during an emergency response.
We also encourage residents to allow additional travel time for daily commutes and errands as traffic patterns stabilize over the next several days.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation during this major regional infrastructure project and will continue working closely with our public safety partners throughout the closure.
