📢 New World Screwworm (NWS) Weekly Update

As of Wednesday, September 2, 2026, there are no confirmed cases of New World Screwworm in Hidalgo County. Across Texas, 2 active cases and 43 inactive cases are currently reported.

Monitoring continues across the state, and we will continue sharing weekly updates to help keep our community informed.

⚠️ Think your animal may have New World screwworm? Act quickly.

If you notice suspicious wounds or signs of infestation:
âś” Isolate the affected animal from others when possible.
âś” Contact your veterinarian immediately.
âś” Report suspected cases to the Texas Animal Health Commission.
âś” Do not ignore wounds, early treatment can help prevent serious complications.

Prompt reporting supports rapid response efforts and helps protect animals throughout our region.

At the Hidalgo County Public Health Laboratory in Edinburg, you can get lab work without a doctor’s order, with prices starting at just $10. Tests include: cholesterol, blood sugar, diabetes, thyroid health, anemia and more!

Services are available to all Hidalgo County residents. Walk-ins are welcome, or call 956-292-7765 to schedule an appointment.
