Today, we celebrate a milestone for the preservation movement.

Congratulations to Brent Leggs on becoming the 11th President and CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Through his leadership of the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, Brent helped elevate historic places that had long been overlooked and demonstrated the power of preservation to strengthen communities and tell a fuller American story.

His appointment reflects extraordinary leadership and a lifelong commitment to ensuring that more of America's stories are recognized and protected.

As a longtime friend, supporter, and ally of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, Brent has generously championed our work and the broader movement to preserve the diverse histories that shape our nation. We are proud to celebrate this achievement and look forward to the impact of his leadership in the years ahead.

African American community is rooted in our shared local history.

The family of Lenora White Callis, Edinburg's first African American nurse, is sharing her story as her legacy is celebrated by the community she served.

Lenora cared for patients for more than 10 years at Grandview Hospital in Edinburg in the mid-1950s. The hospital was not segregated at the time.

- The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum operated by the Webb County Heritage Foundation resembles a mid-19th century Laredo home featuring a kitchen with period utensils and furniture and a ranching office of the time with related artifacts. Located in historic downtown Laredo, right by the Rio Grande, this museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A marker recently installed on Highway 4 recognizes the importance of the 16,000 soldiers of the United States Colored Troops who took part in the blockade of Brazos Santiago in Cameron County.
