On Monday, July 20, 2020, the Hidalgo County Detention Center tested 41 inmates for COVID-19 after the inmates demonstrated or reported symptoms consistent with the virus.

On Tuesday, July 21, 2020, the Sheriff’s Office received the results of the exams and confirmed 32 of the inmates tested positive for COVID-19, in addition to 6 cases previously confirmed.

The inmates have since been transferred to Negative Pressure Cell (NPC) where they are housed alone or housed in larger cells with other COVID-19 positive inmates. The inmates are constantly monitored by jail medical staff and provided medical care.

Loyal To The End

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Chief Daniel Walden and all the staff of the Donna ISD Police Department for inviting us to attend the memorial services for their K9 Officer Honz. At the ceremony, Chief reminded everyone of how Officer Honz joined their department in 2013 after serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It is for this reason that Officer Honz was given full Veterans Honors, which included the folding and presentation of the US Flag, a 21 gun salute, and the playing of Taps.

During his years with the Police Department K9 Honz served as a Therapy K9 and continuously provided students with comfort and security whenever he was needed. Honored guests at the ceremony were his partner Corporal Robert Rodriguez and his family, who invited K9 Honz into their home and cared for him until his passing. K9 Officer Honz we thank you for your service. May you Rest In Peace, end of watch June 11, 2020.
