Hidalgo County launches the $7 million Mortgage and Rent Relief Program for those affected by COVID-19

EDINBURG – Hidalgo County on Monday launched the Mortgage and Rent Relief Program to assist rural county residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with short-term mortgage and rental assistance, Hidalgo County Community Service Agency Executive Director Jaime Longoria said on Monday. Qualifying residents will get assistance paying their mortgage or rent for up to two months.

Funding for this assistance program comes directly from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act enacted by Congress earlier this year. Then the Hidalgo County Commissioners Court set aside $7.5 million to fund this program.

“This program was designed to assist families who were affected by COVID-19 post March 13,” said Longoria. Households must make 200% or below the Federal Poverty Level to qualify.”

Applicants will need to provide proof that they have been laid off or are working reduced hours because of COVID-19's impact on the local economy.

To be eligible:

• You must have been affected by COVID-19 due to loss of wages, job, or illness
• You must be a rural resident of the County, or live in Granjeno or Sullivan City
• You must live below 200% federal poverty line

When applying you must have the following:

• Valid Picture ID for applicant
• Birth Certificate or Valid ID for everyone else in the household
• Proof you were affected by COVID-19, including income, furlough, shelter order, and quarantine information
• Income information for the past 30 days for the entire household
• Your Mortgage or Rent Agreement or receipts of past expenses
• And, you must submit a W-9 from your Mortgage Company or Landlord

Assistance will be paid directly to the landlord or the lender of qualified applicants.

“Since the beginning of this pandemic, we were all concerned with what the economic impact was going to be on families,” said Longoria. “I am proud to say that Commissioners Court has been proactive in assisting the community during these unprecedented times.”

We are accepting applications right now. Apply online at our website: www.hidalgocares.org OR you can apply over the phone at 956-205-7058.

COVID-19 takes the life of one more person in Hidalgo County; another 402 test positive for the virus.

"I am very distraught with today’s rising numbers and, in particular, with the report of another death,” said Judge Cortez. “My condolences go out to this man’s friends and family. Our rise in numbers has become a problem and I've taken action trying to slow infection rates by limiting mass and social gatherings, and by requiring facial coverings inside of covered spaces and buildings. Ultimately, however, we must protect ourselves.”

These numbers reflect the total throughout the weekend. Sat-Sun.

With all due respect, I would like to know which Asst D.A plead out all 19 cases against Juan Carlos Chapa Jr, the same man who shot and killed Officer Espericueta on Thursday June 20, 2019. What was their reasoning for pleading out each and ever time? I know the court was #5, but I also know the judge relies heavily on the recomendation of the Asst DA's opinion. So why was this so called man allowed to be free to kill a police officer. Some say he was mentally ill? Yet what I have read through the courts nothing was mention about his mental status, because for sure with all the 19 times he had be arrested before someone in the DA's office would have said he was mentally ill and sectioned him in a mental institute and no drug counseling. What justifications can you give the citizens of Hidalgo County why this man was out on the street when just a little over a month ago he had been arrested and charged with resisting arrest and transport, only serving 18 days for this. What justification can you give his family for them not having their son, father, husband with them?
The sheriff of a county known to be the Gulf Cartel’s main corridor into Texas recently spoke out against more border security investments. The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office is also working to shake the memory of its former sheriff, commander, narcotics unit, and crime stoppers program being tied to Mexican cartel-linked drug traffickers. - https://www.breitbart.com/border/2019/02/19/texas-border-sheriff-from-agency-historically-linked-to-drug-cartels-denounces-more-security/# .
