We still need eyes on Delaney Hall as the strikes inside continue. Outside, two community efforts are ongoing.
One is the hospitality tent that’s long served family members visiting loved ones detained inside. While we were there, we witnessed someone who had just been released, receiving support from the volunteers. Even after visitations were suspended last week, they’ve remained to protect supplies and help inform people who show up unaware of the changes.
A second tent serves as mutual aid for the ongoing protests. People have maintained a presence outside Delaney Hall, day and night for weeks, with no formal leadership. People show up and contribute what they can. When we visited during the day, we asked what they needed and made a quick run for supplies.
Any form of community presence here is helpful. It lets families and the people inside know they are not alone. It continues the crucial effort to draw attention to what’s happening inside this for-profit detention center.
Many of the hunger and labor strikers have been transferred to facilities across the country. Despite the risk of retaliation, women inside have joined the strike, calling for access to medical care and family visitation, faster processing of cases, and the release of mothers, young women, and those with medical vulnerabilities. Our neighbors inside are still fighting, and so should we.
