When I got married, I wanted the day to show the people I loved who we were and what mattered to us. So part of our wedding day was spent at the Food Bank, packing food boxes together. We ended up being the last volunteer group before everything shut down for COVID.

I’ve always been a person who notices. I notice who is being overlooked, what isn’t working, and where people are being failed. And once I see it, I have a hard time pretending I didn’t.

That is a big part of why service matters so much to me.

I’m comfortable being uncomfortable. I don’t think any job is beneath me, and I don’t believe leadership should create distance between you and the work.

If you’re given the opportunity to lead, nothing is beneath you. The hard work, the unpopular work, the work nobody is lining up to claim. You are responsible for getting close enough to understand it and willing enough to do something about it.

The more I learn about what has been happening at the Oklahoma County Commission, the worse it gets…

There are serious concerns about corruption and conflicts of interest. They have committed to a jail project roughly $600 million beyond what voters originally authorized, which is why taxpayers are now being asked to approve a new sales tax in November. Two of the three commissioners voted to put that tax on your ballot. District 1 was the only district to strongly oppose that decision.

I am a strong NO on the sales tax in November.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to share a decision tree I put together outlining potential options and the questions that need to be answered under each one. I actually have a plan. I’ve thought through what happens if the sales tax passes, what happens if it doesn’t, and what we need to know before making another major decision.

We are seeing cross-partisan support because being a county commissioner is not a Democratic or Republican job.

I thrive on asking the hard questions. I like digging into the details, figuring out what doesn’t make sense and asking what happens next.

And I’m extremely disappointed by what we continue to see from the County Commission: reactive decision-making and major commitments with absolutely no plan for what comes next.

This November, voters will have a choice between someone who is already part of the current county leadership structure and someone willing to loudly call out corruption, ask hard questions and push for a different way of doing business.

How we win matters.

What I’m seeing at the state and county level is worth saying out loud. Super PACs and mega donors can spend virtually unlimited amounts of money flooding voters with attack mailers, misleading information, and now AI-generated images being used in political attacks as if that’s just normal.

Politics has never been particularly gentle, and not everyone plays fair. But somewhere in all of this money and political strategy, we’ve lost sight of the fact that these are real people running to serve their communities. Candidates may not control every dollar spent or every message put into a race, but we still have a responsibility to decide what we are willing to stand behind or stay quiet about.

I’m running a grassroots campaign funded by everyday people, and watching these Oklahoma races has reinforced how uncomfortable I am with the role money is allowed to play in our elections.

We should be able to say when something is wrong and say when something is good, no matter whose name is attached to it. When the election is over, we are still neighbors, still part of the same communities, and still responsible for how we treated each other along the way.

I’m running because I really believe in what Oklahoma County can be. We have a lot going for us, and some big decisions ahead. I think we need some different people at the table, people who will ask questions, look a little further down the road, and remember that every dollar we spend belongs to the public.

VOTE ON NEW JAIL TAX: Oklahoma County voters will decide whether to approve a 0.40% sales tax increase to build a new $605 million jail at SE 15th and Grand Blvd.

The 0.40% sales tax increase would amount to an extra 40 cents for every $100 spent. The tax increase would be in effect for 25 years if approved.

The tax measure will be on the November 3rd ballot.
