As hard as we try, there are some structures that simply cannot be saved. The old barn behind Bell House is a good example. One side collapsed years ago, shifting the foundation (beams on big rocks!) to a dangerous tipping point. A local salvage group is carefully taking it down board by board. They are going to mill some of the wood into flooring for the new washhouse and give us enough to construct a garden shed. They will repurpose the rest so others can enjoy the old barn wood for their projects. We’re sad to see it go, but are glad parts can live on elsewhere.

This little building behind the Bell House has always been affectionately called the “wash house.” Actually, the family rendered hogs on the first floor. The second floor was a cool finished space, with bead board walls and ceiling, where the men snuck off to hide from the ladies and imbibe. Unfortunately, after 100+ years, the building’s fragile creek rock foundation had begun to crumble and large cracks had appeared. We salvaged all the siding and much of the inside wood, but the rest came down today before it collapsed by itself (the wood base plate was almost entirely rotted away). We already have poured a new foundation just behind the old one and will be rebuilding this treasured little space in the next year, using as much of the original parts as possible. The old space will become part of a beautiful new patio soon. Thanks to Rogers & Curtis Construction & Remodel and John England for their expert salvage skills and careful handiwork.

Wow! Thank you to everyone who came today to our first Home Tour. Together we raised $2,000 for the Metcalfe County Animal Shelter!!!

It was great seeing old friends and making new ones. We deeply appreciate all the kind words and support.

Several people asked if we are going to open the house again. We might in the spring - stay tuned.

And remember that we are now available to book weddings, photo shoots and other special events.
