Have the day off tomorrow? and use some of your free time to develop an Emergency Plan!
First, consider
1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
2. What is my shelter plan?
3. What is my evacuation route?
4. What is my family/household communication plan?
5. Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?
Then, think about what needs your household has, like
• Different ages of members within your household
• Responsibilities for assisting others
• Locations frequented
• Dietary needs
• Medical needs including prescriptions and equipment
• Disabilities or access and functional needs including devices and equipment
• Languages spoken
• Cultural and religious considerations
• Pets or service animals
• Households with school-aged children
Finally, put it all together with the Family Emergency Plan Template from FEMA

Situation:

Edwards AFB is tracking several fires within the Los Angeles Basin. The closest fire has currently been designated as the HURST Fire south of Santa Clarita and the Lidia Fire south of Acton. Evacuation orders have been put in place. Currently the Hurst fire area has been raised to evacuation level 3. For a full list of evacuation areas please visit www.fire.ca.gov. Several shelters have been established to support displaced personnel; a full list of shelter locations can be found at www.watchduty.org. If you have been affected by the fires in the area, please coordinate with your leadership so we can ensure individual support for those affected.

Active Fires in the LA Basin:

The HURST Fire is spreading rapidly and due to the high winds, the fire is trending southwest. Currently there is 0% Contained and at the time of this message has burned approximately 700 acres.

The PALISADES Fire is currently 15832 Acres with 0% Contained

The EATON Fire (North of Pasadena) currently 10600 Acres with 0% Contained

The Lidia Fire (South of Acton) currently 50+ Acres. Unknown if Contained

Road Closures:

There are dozens of road closures that are affected by the fires, limit travel outside of the Antelope Valley. When traveling maintain awareness for emergency vehicles responding to and from the fire affected areas.

Notices and Updates:

To stay apprised of the situation in the affected areas, we recommend www.fire.ca.gox or www.watchduty.org for current updates and status on evacuations and shelters. In the event of an emergency please call 9-1-1.

The Office of Emergency Management would like to remind everyone of some wildfire safety. While we are not in a traditional wildfire season, due to the high winds, low humidity, and mild temperatures are a recipe for severe wildfires.

Before

-Create a fire-resistant zone free of leaves, debris or flammable materials for at least 30 feet from your home.

-Charge portable batteries, gather essential items (important documents, cash, clothing, etc) into a ‘Go Bag’ and be prepared to evacuate at any moment.

-Develop an evacuation plan with several alternate routes and locations to seek shelter.

-If possible, keep gas tank as full as possible to aid in quick evacuation.

During

-Pay attention to emergency alerts and notifications for information and instructions.

-Evacuate immediately if authorities tell you to do so!

-If trapped, call 9-1-1 and give your location, but be aware that emergency response could be delayed or impossible. Turn on lights to help rescuers find you.

-Use an N95 mask to protect yourself from smoke inhalation or limit your exposure to smoke by doing the following:

-Choose a room to close off from outside air and set up a portable air cleaner or filter to keep the air in this room clean even when it’s smoky in the rest of the building and outdoors.

-Use high efficiency filters in your central air conditioning system to capture fine particles from smoke. If your system has fresh air intake, set the system to “recirculate” mode and close the outdoor intake damper.

-If you are not ordered to evacuate but smoky conditions exist, stay inside in a safe location or go to a community building where smoke levels are lower.

If you are sick and need medical attention, contact your healthcare provider for further care instructions and shelter in place, if possible.

Watch Duty, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, alerts you of nearby wildfires and firefighting efforts in real-time.
