Today, on Veterans Day, the Vail Mountain Rescue Group pauses to express our deepest gratitude to the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Your dedication, courage, and self-sacrifice are the foundation of the freedom we work to protect in the backcountry every single day.

For many of us, the call to serve and protect continues here in County, and we are proud to have Veterans among our ranks and volunteers.

We also want to give a sincere thank you to all of our incredible partner agencies who make our work possible. Your unwavering support is crucial to every mission.

This photo by Kali Redmond of Vail Mountain Rescue Group won third place in the best rescue or training photo category of this year's contest. “This photo was taken on the third day of our Rigging for Rescue course last season. We had been practicing the pike and pivot maneuver and a ride and lower of the litter, as well as proper anchor set-ups. On this day, we set up a high angle rescue scenario with members from Vail Mountain Rescue and ski patrollers from Beaver Creek Mountain. We work closely with patrollers from both Vail and Beaver Creek Mountains, and we also have many patrollers who are members of our team."

At 1:25 p.m. on this day 20 years ago, Michelle Vanek, a young mother from Denver vanished after separating from her hiking partner near the summit of Mount of the Holy Cross, initiating one of the largest search and rescue operations in state history. This story, written by VMRG's president and K9 technical lead, revisits the 2005 search effort, and how current members of the team worked together to finally bring Michelle home to her family nearly 19 years later, and the impact that this tragedy has had on three generations of the Vanek family.

Today we pause to remember Michelle and her family, and honor past and present members of this team and other SAR teams around the state and local and state agencies--including Alpine Rescue Team, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, Front Range Rescue Dogs, Search And Rescue Dogs Of Colorado, Colorado National Guard, Colorado Search and Rescue Association - CSAR, Eagle County Sheriff's Office and many many others--with hundreds of volunteers from the Vail community who worked together in common cause. So that others--including those who were left behind--may live.

A member of the search team investigates who she was, how her death impacted her family, and what we all need to consider before heading into the alpine
