Yesterday, the Madison County Bar Association hosted the annual Bar Memorial Service at the Madison County Courthouse, honoring the three local attorneys who passed away in 2025, including Appellate Court Justice Thomas Welch, Robert Ryan, and Mark Levy. Judge Patrick King and Judge Andrew Carruthers organized this year’s event. A full courtroom of judges, lawyers, families and friends were present to remember and honor these fine attorneys. Former IL State Bar Association President Dennis Orsey served as the master of ceremonies. Thanks to President Leigh Perica and the Madison County Bar Association for holding another great ceremony.

On May 2, Madison County Circuit Judge Sarah Smith, also Colonel Smith serving as the Illinois Army National Guard Chief of Staff, was awarded the Legion of Merit in recognition for her exceptionally meritorious service and transformative leadership as the State Judge Advocate. The Legion of Merit is one of the United States military’s most prestigious decorations, ranking high in the order of precedence and just below the Silver Star. Congrats to Judge Smith on receiving this high honor!

The Third Judicial Circuit Courts in both Madison and Bond Counties will be closed on Thursday February 12 in observance of Lincoln's Birthday and again on Monday February 16 for President's Day.

The Madison County Circuit Court will have a delayed opening tomorrow due to inclement weather. The Courthouse will open at 10:30 a.m. Any appearances scheduled before 10:30 a.m. will be reset unless otherwise notified.

Last Friday was Adoption Day at the Madison County Courthouse. Led by Circuit Judge Amy Maher, this annual event (usually right before the holidays) is the result of months-long planning by the Court and several partners, including Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Hoyleton Youth and Family Services, Restore Network, Riverbend Family Ministries, Brightpoint, CASA, The Macoupin Art Collective, Edwardsville High School Drama Club, and the Madison County Bar Association. Working together, 36 children were formally adopted from foster care into loving, permanent families on what is the happiest day of the year at the courthouse.

On Saturday, Circuit Judge Sarah Smith (also known as Colonel Smith with the Illinois Army National Guard) and the Madison County Veterans Court team participated in the Wreaths Across America Ceremony at Alton National Cemetery. The annual event is known as Wreaths Across America Day and honors our veterans by placing a wreath at the graves of departed heroes in military cemeteries across the country. Thanks to all for their service.

This week Circuit Judge Kyle Napp,  Associate Judge Neil Schroeder, and Judicial Assistant Katie Mettler delivered holiday gifts collected at the Madison County Criminal Justice Center. Judge Napp coordinates this annual effort as part of the Angel Tree program. Through generous donations and in coordination with Margaret Freer of Freer Auto Body, they were able to help 50 local families. Great job!
