Hands-on training opportunities are invaluable in preparing responders for complex incidents. So when the Madison County Technical Rescue Team got a chance on Thursday to conduct structural collapse training in a realistic environment, they grabbed it!
Mitchell Fire Rescue and the Edwardsville Fire Department brought equipment and resources for the team to use and practice with throughout the day.
A big thank you to Keller Construction and Aaron Suess for providing the opportunity. We're also grateful to EMS & Emergency Preparedness Director Eric Brandmeyer and EMS Coordinator Darin Hartman from Anderson Hospital for taking the time to visit to observe the team’s capabilities.
Strong partnerships continue to make a difference for the Madison County Technical Rescue Team!

***UPDATE: This road has reopened.***

TRAFFIC ALERT: Traffic is being diverted off of State Route 143 near the railroad bridge west of Edwardsville due to an incident involving a large vehicle that struck the bridge. That section of the road is expected to be closed for a few hours Wednesday afternoon (May 13), while the area is cleared. If you can take a different route, that's advisable. Otherwise, please be patient and alert.

If you can spare a bit of time on Friday afternoon, May 22, we've got a simple way to help out in the community. We're co-hosting a Battle of the Badges blood drive with our colleagues in the Edwardsville Police Department. It's a vital need (and it's a fun, friendly competition to see which department has the most donors)! Appointments are not required but are recommended; available times run from 12:30-5:30 p.m. Visit: https://www.redcrossblood.org/

We are again teaming up with Edwardsville Fire Department for a Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on May 22, 2026 from 1230-530pm.

Please call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit RedCrossBlood.org and enter: EdwardsvilleBB to schedule an appointment.

Having a way to receive alerts during hazardous weather or other emergencies is VERY important. Madison County is currently moving from CodeRED to the Everbridge system for residents to receive these alerts. If you previously were signed up for CodeRED, your account has been moved to Everbridge. Please refer to the Madison County Emergency Agency's post for more details.

With severe weather in the forecast, please be sure you have one or more ways of receiving alerts and warnings: phone apps, weather radio, local radio or TV broadcasts, or the internet. If you are outdoors, be alert for tornado sirens, which are intended to warn those who are outside of impending or possible weather dangers.
📌 Do you know the difference between a tornado or storm WARNING and a WATCH?
‼️ A watch means a tornado or severe weather is possible in your area based on conditions.
‼️ A warning means the hazard (tornado, etc.) has been sighted or indicated via radar.
📌 Do you know where to seek shelter in the event of a tornado or weather emergency?
‼️ A basement or cellar typically will provide the best protection; if those aren't available, an interior room without windows in the lowest level of your location is the next best place to consider, according to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
📌 To learn about some available options for receiving emergency alerts locally, including CodeRED, visit the Madison County Emergency Management website: https://www.madisoncountyil.gov/departments/emergency_management/alert_systems.php

CAR SEAT SAFETY CHECK EVENT: We're happy to provide space in the Public Safety Building, 333 S. Main Street, this Thursday, April 23, for a FREE car seat safety check. It's open to the public, no appointment necessary, between 1 and 3 p.m., and will cover proper car seat installation and use.
This event is being offered and run by certified car seat safety technicians affiliated with Southern Illinois University Carbondale and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Participating parents and caregivers are asked to bring the owner's manual for both the vehicle and the car seat and to bring the child who will use the seat if possible.
We are glad to be able to host this opportunity, which is so important to keeping children safe while in a vehicle and on the road!
