Madison County invested more than $52 million in American Rescue Plan Act resources locally, putting federal dollars into projects throughout the county designed to strengthen communities and provide long-term benefits to local taxpayers.

This is the first in a five-part series that will run weekly, taking a closer look at how Madison County invested those dollars locally — from water and sewer infrastructure and stormwater improvements to public safety, economic recovery and government modernization — and how those investments will continue benefiting the county after the federal program ends.

Today, Madison County pauses to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor the courage and sacrifice shown in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Twenty-five years ago today, the events of Sept. 11 unfolded over the course of a morning that forever changed our nation. All times are Eastern:

• 8:46 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

• 9:03 a.m. — United Airlines Flight 175 struck the South Tower.

• 9:37 a.m. — American Airlines Flight 77 struck the Pentagon.

• 9:59 a.m. — The South Tower collapsed.

• 10:03 a.m. — United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew fought back.

• 10:28 a.m. — The North Tower collapsed.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day. We remember them, the first responders who ran toward danger, the passengers and crew who showed extraordinary courage, and the families whose lives changed forever.

Twenty-five years later, we remember where we were. We remember those we lost. We remember the bravery that united our nation.

May we never forget. 🇺🇸
