In the fall of 1951, the government purchased 1,376 acres in ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ, ๐ง๐ฒ๐
๐ฎ๐ and ๐๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐น๐ฑ was reactivated for single-engine jet training during the ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฟ. In 1954 they began housing F-86F Sabre Jet fighter planes.
In 1955, ๐๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ (๐๐๐) was designated headquarters for the
๐ก๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ต ๐๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ, a new branch of the ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ under Gen. Henry Viccellio. Base personnel increased to about 6,000, with new F-100C Super-Sabre jets replacing the F-86s.
As a new ๐ง๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ it meant it was a fighter plane base. We had the newest and the best fighter planes stationed there for home defense, which seemed important in the 50s. The F-100 and the F-101 fighter planes had replaced the F-86s from the ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ช๐ฎ๐ฟ era.
I came to ๐๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐น๐ฑ'๐ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฌ๐๐ต ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐๐ฒ๐ฟ-๐๐ฎ๐ ๐ช๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ผ๐ป ๐๐๐ด๐๐๐ ๐ญ, ๐ญ๐ต๐ฑ๐ฒ and was assigned to the ๐ฐ๐ฑ๐ฌ๐๐ต ๐ ๐ผ๐๐ผ๐ฟ ๐ฉ๐ฒ๐ต๐ถ๐ฐ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฆ๐พ๐๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป, ๐ต๐๐ต ๐๐ถ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ก๐๐๐ฃ๐ฃ-๐.
I worked in the motor pool there as a staff car driver. I drove a staff car on the flight line, mostly taking incoming officers where they needed to go. Later, I was the base commander driver for a Brigadier General.
When I was his driver, I only drove whomever he told me to, that might be his family or a visiting officer. Only people he authorized were able to use his car. That means most of the time I only drove him for his wife or children where they wanted to go. The rest of the time I just kept the car clean and ready for them.
In ๐๐๐ด๐๐๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ญ๐ต๐ฑ๐ณ, the ๐๐ฒ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ฒ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ฒ surprised the base commanders and everyone there with the announcement that it was closing Foster AFB. Despite a rigorous "Save Foster" campaign, it was closed and I was reassigned to ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ๐ผ๐น๐ฝ๐ต ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐น๐ฑ ๐ถ๐ป ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ป ๐๐ป๐๐ผ๐ป๐ถ๐ผ, ๐ง๐ฒ๐

In 1976, ๐๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ถ๐ฒ๐น๐ฑ became the site of ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ด๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฝ๐ผ๐ฟ๐.
