Correction: This map replaces an earlier post that used a different tax dataset. This corrected map uses Tax Foundation data for combined state and average local sales tax rates as of January 1, 2024. Illinois ranks 7th at 8.855%.

UPDATE: After reviewing questions raised in the comments, we found that some figures on this graphic need correction. We take accuracy seriously and want to correct the record.

Using the Tax Foundation's January 1, 2024 combined state and average local sales tax data:

• Illinois: 8.855%, ranking 7th highest in the nation—not 8th as shown on the graphic.

• Georgia: 7.384%, higher than the 7.09% shown on the graphic.

• Massachusetts: 6.25%, not 0% as shown.

• New Jersey: 6.60%, not 0% as shown.

• Vermont: 6.36%, not 0% as shown.

• Indiana: 7.00%, not 0% as shown.

• West Virginia: 6.57%, not 0% as shown.

The states correctly shown at 0% on the graphic were Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon.

While some figures and Illinois' ranking on the graphic needed correction, Illinois was still among the states with the highest combined sales tax rates in the nation.
