As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, on this day in 1865, news of freedom finally reached Galveston, Texas, bringing word that slavery had come to an end.

More than two years earlier, Illinois' own Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring that those held in slavery in rebellious states "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free."
