Starting on Monday December 7, 2020 and under the guidance of the California Department of Public Health, San Diego County Libraries will provide Walk Up Door Side service Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at all 33 branches.

It is National Reading Day! For those of you who love to read, remember that there are many adults who wish they could read. One way to share your love for reading is to become a volunteer adult literacy tutor!

On National Reading Day, we celebrate Norman Brown who learned to read at age 47 after hiding his illiteracy from his school teachers years ago.

"I Opened a Book" Poem by Julia Donaldson

"I opened a book and in I strode.
Now nobody can find me.
I've left my chair, my house, my road,
My town and my world behind me.
I'm wearing the cloak, I've slipped on the ring,
I've swallowed the magic potion.
I've fought with a dragon, dined with a king
And dived in a bottomless ocean.
I opened a book and made some friends.
I shared their tears and laughter
And followed their roads with its bumps and bends
To the happily ever after.
I finished my book and out I came.
The cloak can no longer hide me.
My chair and house are just the same,
But I have a book inside me."
