With deep sadness, we share that former Superintendent Mike Fowler has passed away following a heroic battle with brain cancer. Mr. Fowler devoted nearly three decades of extraordinary service to the students and families of East County, profoundly shaping the lives of countless students through his compassion and unwavering belief in the power of education.

“Superintendent Fowler’s leadership made a profound and lasting difference in the lives of students, staff, and families. His compassion and unwavering commitment to students defined his service and shaped our East County community. On behalf of the Governing Board, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Maria, their children, and the entire Fowler family. We grieve this loss together and honor the legacy he leaves behind.”

Governing Board President Dr. Gary C. Woods announced today that Dr. Kirsten Vital Brulte has been named Superintendent Finalist for GUHSD.

Dr. Vital Brulte brings 30 years of experience in California public education to GUHSD, along with a proven record of innovative, student-centered leadership. She most recently served for eight years as Superintendent of Capistrano Unified School District (CUSD), the largest district in Orange County, serving more than 44,000 students.

During her tenure, CUSD earned back-to-back Golden Bell Awards, tripled enrollment in Career Technical Education programs, modernized facilities, and launched robust math and literacy initiatives that helped mitigate COVID-era learning loss.

Official approval is expected on June 10.

In our Agricultural and Natural Resources Career Technical Education Pathways, students can learn about Agriscience, Agricultural Mechanics, Agricultural Business, and Ornamental Horticulture/Floral Design. All of these pathways are available at El Capitan High School.

The "A-G" requirements are a sequence of high school courses that students must complete (with a grade of C or better) to be minimally eligible for admission to the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU). They represent the basic level of academic preparation that high school students should achieve to undertake university work. They are commonly known as the "A-G requirements" because of the letter each subject area is assigned:

A. History/Social Science
B. English
C. Mathematics
D. Laboratory Science
E. Language Other than English
F. Visual/Performing Arts
G. College Preparatory Elective
