Today is the day we lay to rest one of this city’s most favorite citizens to ever serve her community. Ms. Harris not only worried about those in her district, but what was good for the benefit of everyone in our great city. She always asked the questions that some others might not have wanted to, but always had the best interest of everyone in mind. She was a great supporter of the El Campo Volunteer Fire Department always voicing her support for our needs and cause. One of the things that will serve as a shining memory for our members was at a town hall meeting at her church to answer any questions about a bond to replace our aging Ladder truck. When asked about it, Ms. Harris replied “If they need it, they need it. If they didn’t need it they wouldn’t be asking”. You showed us all what it is like to be a true servant for others and what a life well lived is. Our prayers and condolences to her family from all the members of The El Campo Volunteer Fire Department.

With hearts full of gratitude and reflection, we honor the life and legacy of longtime Councilwoman Gloria Harris, who went to be with the Lord on February 6, 2026.

In 1987, Mrs. Harris made history as the first Black woman elected to the El Campo City Council, where she proudly represented District 2 for 30 years (1987 – 1997, 1999 – 2009, 2013 – 2023). She didn’t just open doors — she broke them down, creating opportunities for others to walk through with confidence and purpose. Her leadership, courage, and dedication reshaped our city and will continue to inspire generations to come.

Mrs. Harris was a woman of deep and abiding faith, which guided her life, her service, and her relationships. Her faith shaped her compassion, strengthened her resolve, and grounded her leadership. It was evident in the grace she extended to others, the humility with which she served, and the steady presence she brought to every room. She was also a respected steward of El Campo’s history, possessing a remarkable depth of knowledge about our community, its people, and its stories. Her insight enriched every conversation and helped guide thoughtful, informed decision-making.

Her commitment to public service, steady leadership, and genuine care for those she served helped shape both the direction and character of our organization and our city. She believed in showing up, doing the work, and making a difference — and she lived those values every single day.

Beyond her years of service, she will be remembered for her dedication, her presence, and the genuine pride she took in serving El Campo. She gave her time, her energy, and her voice to causes that mattered, and she did so with purpose and heart.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside her. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

2 Timothy 4:7 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

As the winter storm bears down on us and the moisture starts to freeze and the temperature falls to lows we rarely see in South Texas, theres a few tips to keep everyone warm and safe. If you utilize one of these heat lamps or any other lamp that gives off heat to keep your plants, pets or water pipes warm during the winter months, please use caution where they are placed. Make sure you provide enough spacing between the lamp and anything combustible. Also, try and plug the lamps directly into the electrical outlet and try not to use extension cords. We don’t want anyone damaging or losing their house because these lamps were placed incorrectly. Also remember to never overload power strips and plug all space heaters directly into an outlet and not into an extension cord. Be sure to keep all combustible materials far away from your heaters. And lastly if you do lose power, never under any circumstance run a gasoline generator inside the house or even the garage because carbon monoxide is an odorless and silent killer. If you dont have heat or if you lose power and need a place to go, remember the warming center opened up at St.Roberts church Everyone stay warm and be safe and dial 911 for all emergencies. Please stay home and off the roads as it will take longer than normal to reach your emergency.

Weather models are showing our area on the edge of the rain/frozen precipitation for this weekend. With a possible Winter Storm approaching this weekend,we want to encourage everyone to stay home and off the roadways if in fact we receive some wintry precipitation. If you do have to travel, make sure your car is full of gas and you pack some snacks and blankets in case you have trouble. Hazardous roads make it where it takes longer to get help to you. Another major hurdle is trying to keep your family and your pets warm.
Here are some crucial tips to help protect your home and loved ones:

Install and maintain smoke alarms: Test them monthly and replace batteries regularly.
Create and practice escape plans: Have two ways out of every room and designate a safe meeting place outside.
Never leave cooking unattended: Stay in the kitchen when you're frying, grilling, or broiling food.
Keep flammable materials away from heat sources: This includes paper, clothing, and furniture.
Be cautious with space heaters: Never leave them unattended and keep them away from flammable materials.
Have your chimney inspected annually: Prevent dangerous creosote buildup.
Never run generators or bbq pits in your house or garage. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, silent killer.
Be very careful when using heat lamps in pet areas or other places to keep pets out pipes warm. In recent years this has been the cause of numerous structure fires.
Let's work together to prevent these tragedies. Share this post to spread awareness and keep our community safe.
Above all if a fire breaks out, get everyone out and immediately call 911. Don’t wait or try to put it out first. Get help coming. A Fire can double in size every 30-45 seconds. Things can be replaced. You can not.
