New Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) has Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on May 11th and is opening to the public on May 12th
El Centro, Calif. – The Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC) announced the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC) Project located on 3rd Street between Rockwood and Heffernan Avenues.
The new intermodal transportation center in downtown Calexico started construction in February 2025. The new ITC will provide multiple transportation services in one place, with new amenities including onsite customer service, shade-producing canopies and waiting areas, benches, bicycle racks, lighting and landscaping, a driver break room, security infrastructure, public restrooms, EV charging stations and improvements to nearby sidewalks and crossings that make them compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The project is located three blocks from the Calexico West Port of Entry Pedestrian Crossing Facility.
“ICTC is proud to celebrate the completion of the Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center (ITC), marking the culmination of over twelve years of planning, engineering and construction efforts to bring this transformative project to fruition. The Calexico ITC demonstrates ICTC's and the entire County's commitment to providing a more equitable, safe, healthier, and efficient transportation experience for the residents of Imperial County. The project is a true testament of what can be accomplished when local, regional, State and Federal partners work together to deliver a common goal." said ICTC Chair Karin Eugenio.
The Calexico ITC project has been in development since 2014 when the planning and feasibility study was adopted. ICTC was awarded funding from multiple sources for this project, including a federal 2023 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant, a Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending grant, a Regional Early Action Planning (REAP 2.0) County Transportation Commissions Partnership grant, and an Active Transportation Program (ATP) Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) component grant.
“The Commission is thrilled to be a funding partner on this critical project that will make transit safer and more accessible for residents of Imperial County and the entire border region,” said California Transportation Commission Chair Clarissa Falcon.
“The Calexico Intermodal Transportation Center showcases what regional collaboration can achieve. S**G is proud to have supported this project since its early stages and we thank the many partner agencies who contributed along the way, including the state for its funding to support implementation of S**G’s regional plan that was awarded this project. Projects like this reflect how thoughtfully directed state resources can support communities to expand transportation options, strengthen their local economies, and enhance quality of life,” said S**G Executive Director Kome Ajise.
The new ITC will create more transportation choices and greater access to daily destinations by bringing together multiple modes of public and private transportation services to create greater connectivity in the local transportation network. The project contributes to regional planning goals by making more trips possible on transit, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
"What started as a vision is now a reality. This center means farm workers, families, and essential workers in Calexico and throughout our communities have a safe, modern place to connect to the transportation they rely on every day. I was glad to secure funding and support this project from the start, and I look forward to seeing it serve our communities for generations to come," said Congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz, M.D., Representative of California's 25th Congressional District.
“Congratulations to ICTC and the City of Calexico for the completion of this project that will benefit the region,” said Caltrans District 11 Director Ann Fox. “Caltrans is excited to have collaborated with ICTC on this project since it’s development in 2014, including the initial feasibility study, design, and funding through California’s Active Transportation Program. The Intermodal Transportation Center will provide a safer and secure transportation experience for all who travel through Imperial County, strengthening our cross-border connectivity and binational relationship.”
Beginning on May 12, 2026, the 3rd and Paulin bus stop will move to the new ITC location at 220 3rd Steet in Calexico.
