Earlier today, El Centro Police Department officers responded to a report of fraud involving scammers who spoofed a law enforcement phone number to make their call appear legitimate.

The victim received a call that appeared to come from the El Centro Police Department’s non-emergency number. The caller falsely claimed the victim was under investigation and would be arrested unless a fine was paid.

The scammer then instructed the victim to purchase $800 worth of Target gift cards as payment.

⚠️ THIS IS A SCAM.

The El Centro Police Department will NEVER call you and demand payment of a fine over the phone. We will also NEVER request payment through gift cards.

Scammers can use technology known as caller ID spoofing to make it appear that a call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency or government office. Do not assume a call is legitimate simply because the correct phone number appears on your caller ID.

If you receive a suspicious call from someone claiming to be with the El Centro Police Department:

• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not purchase gift cards or send money.
• Hang up if you feel pressured or threatened.
• If you are unsure whether the call is legitimate, you can request to handle the matter in person at the El Centro Police Department.

Please share this information with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams.

Remember: A badge, phone number, or caller ID can be impersonated. Never send money or gift cards based solely on a phone call
