Last night, El Centro Police Department patrol officers conducted a traffic stop for a vehicle code violation. During the investigation, officers conducted a records check on the driver and learned he was a convicted felon currently on federal probation with Fourth Waiver search conditions.

The driver and two passengers were detained while officers continued their investigation. A probation search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of an unserialized loaded firearm concealed beneath the driver’s seat.

The firearm was seized as evidence. The driver and both passengers were arrested and booked into the Imperial County Jail on weapons-related charges.

The El Centro Police Department remains committed to proactively enforcing the law and removing illegal fi****ms from our community to help keep our residents safe.

The El Centro Police Department will conduct a Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Checkpoint on Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. at Imperial Avenue and Holt Avenue.

Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing areas with a history of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to enhance public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from our roadways.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Sergeant Miguel Garrido. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The El Centro Police Department reminds drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and ma*****na can all affect your ability to drive safely. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is against the law.

Drivers arrested for a first-time DUI can face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.

Plan ahead. If you plan to drink or use impairing substances, arrange for a designated driver, rideshare service, taxi, or other safe transportation option.

Drive sober. Arrive safely.

This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program.
