The 2nd grade GT Creativity unit ended the semester with a recycled art project. Reduce, Reuse, Reclaim, Repurpose…and Reimagine! Creativity is a vital part of education for gifted students, and it can help them develop critical thinking skills, find their voice, and prepare for the future. By having to use an object to create a new object, students connected seemingly disparate concepts in order to generate fresh ideas. There is an extensive range of creativity that can be expressed with reclaimed materials. We used squash grown for Fall decorating that would have been thrown out after. Students hot glued cut sections from toilet paper rolls and used them to support their art pieces. They painted the squash to create their own Holiday art. In hopes of inspiring more artists to utilize the “re-claim” philosophy in creating their own artwork, we are sharing student work here. Our 2nd grade GT students want to challenge each of you to create your own recycled art project this holiday season. What better way to celebrate the beauty and importance of our earth than with earth-friendly art!

Thank you, Mrs. Johnette Weir, for sending Lily Rainwater with soda tabs for the 4th grade BETA club State Service Learning Project. All tabs will be turned in for recycling to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House. This is a place for families with patients in the Arkansas Children's Hospital. With this latest donation, we have approximately 8,400 tabs to turn in! Collection will continue until we leave for the State competition on January 22, 2025. Send yours with any GT 4th grader in the ESD or drop them off in the office at The Retta Brown GT Center, 505 Dixie Drive.
