It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my beloved Grandfather Papa Sam. He passed away peacefully this morning, Wednesday, March 18th, at 3:27 AM, at the age of 69.

While our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering or in pain. He fought hard to stay with us for as long as he could, but now he can finally rest. We know he is in a better place, looking down on all of us with a smile and probably already excited for the next football season.

Papa Sam would not want us to be consumed with sadness. Instead, he would want us to cherish the memories we shared with him and hold onto the love he gave so freely. There were five things he loved most in this world: his family, my grandma, his grandkids, his dog Buddy, and his Kansas City Chiefs. No matter how he was feeling, he never missed a game the Chiefs were always on TV, and he was always cheering them on.

No matter what was going on, Papa Sam always showed up for my grandma and for his family. He may have joked or said something was “stupid” or “dumb,” but that was just who he was and at the end of the day, he would still do anything he could to help the people he loved.

During this incredibly difficult time, we ask for your prayers especially for my grandma, who is carrying a heavy burden right now. Papa Sam did not have life insurance or arrangements in place, and the financial responsibility has fallen on her. As they are both retired and on fixed incomes, covering funeral expenses has been very challenging.

If you are able to help in any way, it would mean more than we can put into words. We are humbly asking for support to help my grandma through this heartbreaking time. If you’re not able to give, we completely understand and simply ask that you keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.

In lieu of flowers or cards, please feel free to send me a message, and I will provide information on where support can be directed.

We will be sharing funeral arrangements soon.

Thank you all for your love, support, and prayers it truly means everything to our family.

We are in need of volunteer flag holders and American Flags for our First Responders Memorial Section along the route of the 3rd Annual First Responders 5K in Derby, Kansas.

This powerful section of the course will be dedicated to honoring our fallen local first responders. As participants run or walk through this area, they will experience a moving tribute lined with flags and community members standing tall in remembrance.

We would love the help of individuals, Boy Scout troops, Girl Scouts, JROTC groups, American Legion Riders, active and retired military, first responders, or anyone in our community who wishes to play a role in making this memorial truly unforgettable.

If you or your group would like to volunteer to hold a flag and be part of this special tribute, please email me at [email protected].

Together, we can create a moment of reflection and gratitude that participants will carry with them long after the finish line. 🇺🇸

May Charlie Kirk Rest In Peace, My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, kids and family. No one deserves this! I’m in disbelief that our country has come to this point of political violence it is unacceptable and uncalled for, we as a nation need to do better and stop all the violence it is getting out of control. I hope law enforcement find who did this senseless act of violence and hold them fully accountable for their actions. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH THIS NEEDS TO STOP!!! It doesn’t matter who you support, what political views are this should never be tolerated, allowed or accepted . We are America, We are the land of the free and we are turning on our own people because we have different views, opinions and feelings and it needs to come to an end we need to do better!!

This is just one example of the staffing shortage the county is facing and this has been going on for a couple of years now and not one thing has been done to fix it. We really need to protect and prioritize our County Workers.

The Driver's License Office located on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse in El Dorado will close at 1 PM on Tuesday, August 19th, due to staffing issues. Normal business hours will resume Wednesday, August 20th. The office apologizes for the inconvenience.

The Driver's License operating hours will be 8 AM to 1 PM on Tuesday, August 19th.

Please contact the Butler County Treasurer's Office at 316-322-4210 with questions.

As many of you have seen and voiced to me over the last couple of weeks property taxes are on the rise again this year.

Over the past several weeks, many of you have reached out to express your concerns regarding the continued increase in property taxes. Some residents have already received the proposed tax increase notice, while others are still awaiting theirs. The proposal indicates yet another rise in property taxes this year.

I encourage every resident to attend the public hearing on this matter Monday, August 26th, at 6:00 p.m. at the County Courthouse. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard. I remain firmly opposed to any further increase in property taxes.

As a county striving to attract new families, build stronger communities, and grow our population, these constant tax hikes are pushing younger generations away. The result is that the burden increasingly falls on our families still here and our elderly residents many of whom have lived, worked, and contributed to our county for decades.

We must focus on real solutions to attract families and retain our younger population in order to stabilize our economy, strengthen our communities, and maintain our population base. The reality is clear many homes are going up for sale, and families are leaving for more affordable areas in nearby cities. We cannot afford to lose more people, nor can we continue to place the weight of higher taxes on the residents who remain here.

It is time to realign our priorities putting our citizens, infrastructure, county employees, and cities first. We are still facing staffing shortages, struggling to provide competitive wages, and falling short in meeting the needs of both our workforce and our community. This must change.

To put this into perspective: in just three years, the assessed value of my own home and land has risen from $78,300 to $114,650 a $36,350 increase without any improvements made to the property. In that same period, our monthly mortgage payment (including taxes, insurance, and flood insurance) has increased from $785 to $1,100 per month. While our insurance rose only $16 per month and our flood insurance remained unchanged, the bulk of this increase comes directly from repeated property tax hikes. Another increase is already expected next year.

For residents on fixed incomes and even our working families, an extra $315 per month can be hard on them and some cannot even make ends meet, hardworking families are struggling to keep up. Something has to give, and it starts with rethinking how we allocate our tax dollars.

I urge you again please attend the public hearing on August 26th at 6:00 p.m. at the County Courthouse and let your voice be heard.

First Responders Foundation of Kansas

🚨 Support Our Kansas First Responders! 🇺🇸

The First Responders Foundation of Kansas, a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit, will be operating one of the largest fireworks tents in Wichita — located at Kellogg & Tyler, open June 27th–July 4th from 10:00 AM to Midnight!

This year, your support will directly benefit the Derby Police Department and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. Our goal is to raise enough funds to:
• Send five Derby officers to Drone Pilot School
• Purchase essential K-9 equipment
• Provide new training tools for the Sheriff’s K-9 Unit

🎆 When you shop at our tent, you’re not just buying fireworks — you’re investing in those who protect and serve our communities.

📅 While you’re there, stop by and learn more about our upcoming 5K Run/Walk, Car Show & Free Community Day happening October 4th at Derby Middle School.

We’re proud members of the Andover and Derby Chambers of Commerce, and we’re honored to continue serving those who serve us.

Let’s rally together and give back to our heroes.

Rest Easy and Thank you for your Service to the Citizens of Butler County! Please keep Butler County EMS, Paramedic Lauppe’s Family and Friends in your thoughts and prayers.

In Memory of Paramedic Justin Lauppe

The First Responders Foundation of Kansas extends our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to Butler County EMS, as well as to the family, friends, and colleagues of Paramedic Justin Lauppe.

With profound sorrow, we mourn the tragic loss of Paramedic Lauppe, who passed away in the line of duty on May 16, 2025, after suffering cardiac arrest while responding to an emergency call. A dedicated 14-year veteran of emergency medical services, Justin exemplified the courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment that define our first responders.

Justin was more than a paramedic—he was a respected teammate, a devoted caregiver, and a trusted friend to many. His passing is a tremendous loss not only to Butler County EMS but to the entire first responder community.

We ask that you keep Butler County EMS and the Lauppe family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. May we honor Justin’s legacy by continuing to serve our communities with the same heart, bravery, and selflessness that he so humbly displayed every day.

Rest in peace, Paramedic Lauppe. Your service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
