Butler County Conservation District of Kansas

Butler County Conservation District of Kansas Butler County Conservation District was established in 1945. The district's governing board is comprised of five elected local citizens known as supervisors.

Butler County Conservation District is a political subdivision of state government and the primary local unit of government responsible for the conservation of soil, water and related natural resources within Butler County. Severe soil erosion problems in the “Dust Bowl” days prompted the passage of the Conservation District Law by Kansas legislature in 1937, which lead to the formation of conserv

ation districts in Kansas. Across the state, 105 conservation districts (one in every county) provide local leadership by helping local people address local natural resource needs. They establish local priorities, set policy, and administer non-regulatory conservation programs during monthly board meetings. The supervisors, although serving as public officials, do not draw a salary. Conservation district employee(s) are hired by the supervisors to provide day-to-day coordination of district activities.

USDA APHIS has CONFIRMED a case of New World Screwworm (NWS) in a 3‑week‑old beef calf near La Pryor, Texas, and has activated a unified incident command. A 20 km control zone is now in place with movement restrictions on all warm‑blooded animals in that area. All other animals on the premises have been examined, and no additional NWS infestations were found.
Over the past year, APHIS has deployed 8,000+ traps and examined 58,000+ flies nationwide with ALL tests negative outside of this event. In response, APHIS has expedited 4 million sterile flies for immediate use by ground and aerial release, with production expected to ramp up to tens of millions per week by late summer.

The BEST thing producers can do right now: be vigilant. Keep eyes on cattle and other livestock, check animals frequently, and work closely with your veterinarian if you see anything suspicious.

Importantly, USDA, FDA, and CDC have all reaffirmed: this is NOT a food safety issue. The risk is to animal health and livestock production, not the safety of meat or other products.

USCA will remain fully engaged with federal and state partners and will continue to share updates and guidance with producers as new information becomes available.

✨🌷Wildflower of the Week 💐🍄

Prairie/Plains Larkspur (Delphinium carolinianum)

This wildflower is from the Buttercup family and a few distinguishing traits of this family are high number of stamens, the stamens and pistils are arranged in a spiral pattern, and all floral parts are independently attached to the base of the flower.

Prairie Larkspur is a perennial that typically blooms a white flower throughout May and June. It is also TOXIC to livestock and humans and is especially dangerous to cattle because they find it palatable. This wildflower can be found all throughout Kansas in all soil types!
