At 72, most people are winding down. Irene Bernasconi was strapping on diving gear and lowering nets into near-freezing Antarctic water.
The year was 1968. In November, a ship called the ARA Bahía Aguirre left Buenos Aires and crossed the notoriously violent Drake Passage. On board were four women from the Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences, and leading them was a scientist who had already spent nearly half a century studying the quiet, spiny creatures most people step over at the beach without a second glance.
Bernasconi was born in La Plata, Argentina, on September 29, 1896. She trained as a teacher, took up natural sciences in 1918, and by the early 1920s had found her way into the halls of the natural history museum in Buenos Aires. In 1925 she published her first scientific paper, on molluscs and marine invertebrates. Then she found the subject that would define her life: echinoderms. Sea stars. Brittle stars. Sea urchins. Sand dollars. She became Argentina's first true specialist in them, the person other scientists turned to when they needed a name put to a strange creature dredged up from the deep.
For decades she worked in near-anonymity, cataloguing species, correcting old classifications, describing animals no one had formally recorded before. It was patient, unglamorous work. And then, in her eighth decade of life, she was handed the assignment that would put her name on a map.
She and three colleagues — botanist Carmen Pujals, marine biologist Elena Martínez Fontes, and microbiologist María Adela Caría — became the first group of Argentine women to carry out scientific fieldwork in Antarctica. They came to be known as the "Four of Melchior," after the Melchior Base where they lived and worked.
To picture the scale of it, remember what Antarctica was in the late 1960s: still overwhelmingly a man's frontier. Women had spent decades being kept off expeditions on the argument that the cold, the isolation, and the danger simply weren't places for them. So when four Argentine women stepped off that ship at Melchior Base — a scatter of buildings on a small island in an archipelago near the Antarctic Peninsula — they weren't only doing science. They were quietly dismantling an assumption. And the oldest of them was the one in charge.
Their arrival was not gentle. The research station was buried in ice, and before any science could begin, they had to dig and hack their way back into their own base. Picture that as your welcome: you've crossed one of the roughest stretches of ocean on the planet, you're 72 years old, and the first task waiting for you is to physically excavate the building you're supposed to sleep in.
They stayed two and a half months and worked almost without pause. They pulled on diving equipment and set nets and long baited lines down to depths of 180 metres in water cold enough to kill an unprotected person in minutes. They gathered water, mud, plants, and animals. They cultured local microbes for study. And they collected more than 2,000 echinoderm specimens.
Here is what most people miss: the headline is "72-year-old woman leads Antarctic expedition," but the real achievement is buried in those specimens. Among them was evidence of an entirely new family of echinoderms — not just a new species, but a whole new branch on the family tree, a grouping science had never described. To find a single new species is a career highlight for most biologists. To identify a new family is the kind of discovery that rewrites textbooks. And Bernasconi did it in the final act of a long career, in the harshest laboratory on Earth, at an age when the world assumes your best work is already behind you.
It helps to understand what these animals actually are. Echinoderms have no brain in the way we understand one. They have no front or back, no left or right — their bodies radiate outward from a center. Many can regenerate lost parts, regrowing arms and, in some species, nearly a whole body from a fragment. There are roughly 7,000 living species of them, and they have quietly shaped the ocean floor for hundreds of millions of years. When Bernasconi bent over her specimen trays, she wasn't just labelling starfish. She was reading one of the oldest and strangest chapters in the story of life on this planet.
The recognition came, though some of it came slowly. In 1969, the Embassy of Women of America awarded each member of the expedition a commemorative medal. Half a century later, on International Women's Day in 2018 — the 50th anniversary of the voyage — Argentina's Antarctic institutions honored the four scientists once more. That same tribute wrote their names permanently onto the Antarctic map. There is now a Bernasconi Cove, alongside Pujals Cove, Cape Caría, and Cape Fontes, so that four women who made history at the bottom of the world became part of how that world is charted.
Bernasconi kept her bond with the sea until the end. Across roughly five decades of work she reclassified species, corrected old mistakes, and described creatures no one had ever named. She died in Buenos Aires on July 7, 1989, at the age of 92.
It's tempting to reduce her to a single striking image — an elderly woman in a diving suit at the bottom of the world. But that diving suit was earned by all the years before it, by the thousands of quiet hours over specimen trays that nobody photographed. The expedition wasn't a late-life adventure that fell into her lap. It was the natural summit of a lifetime spent noticing what everyone else overlooked.
The world, it was once said of her, was her oyster — though she might have preferred to call it a starfish.
