Our partnership with the DUSD and the safety of our students are top priorities at the El Mirage Police Department. During a critical time, community members need to be informed about the new safety equipment being installed within our school district.

Dysart Schools installed new safety equipment that includes alert lighting fixtures to support visual notifications when specific safety protocols are in place on a campus. If you are on or approaching a campus and lights are activated, please refrain from entering campus and wait for communication regarding updates and next steps. The color of the light indicates which response is taking place. We appreciate your cooperation and support in this effort, and encourage you to review more safety details at www.dysart.org/safety

As the new school year begins, many students will be engaging in more online activities for research and assignments. It's important to ensure that your children are aware of the increased risks associated with internet use. Online exploitation has risen by over 97% in just the past year. The NetSmartz website offers valuable information and resources for both parents and children. https://www.ncmec.org/netsmartz/home

Just before 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 1, EMPD officers received an instant alert from the Flock audio detection system reporting shots fired in the 12000 block of West Larkspur Road.

Thanks to that real-time alert, officers were on scene within moments — and immediately spotted a vehicle speeding away from the area. Officers located two victims at a local hospital; one sustained a gunshot wound, and the other was struck by debris. Both injuries were non-life-threatening.

Acting fast on the information from the audio detection alert and subsequent 911 calls, officers located a suspect at a nearby residence on Larkspur and made an arrest. The suspect now faces several felony charges.

The Flock audio detection system allowed our officers to respond immediately — in this instance, even before a 911 call came in — helping them quickly connect the dots between the shooting scene, the victims, and the suspect, and get a dangerous individual off the streets.
