Drowning is the #1 cause of accidental death in children ages 1 through 4 in Arizona.

In a state with a pool in nearly every neighborhood, water safety is one of the most important things we can advocate for in El Mirage.

This summer, El Mirage asks every family to:
• Never leave children unsupervised near water
• Enroll kids in age-appropriate swim lessons
• Make sure backyard pools have proper fencing and gates
• Learn CPR

Let's protect our kids and make sure we're all water-safe. 💙

💧 Drink water before you're thirsty. When it's this hot in Arizona, your body loses water faster than you realize. By the time you feel thirsty, you may already be dehydrated.

Hydration tips for extreme heat:
• Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day, 2 liters, or half a gallon (more if you're active outdoors)
• Avoid sugary drinks, which can make dehydration worse
• Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges
• Keep a water bottle with you everywhere you go

El Mirage community members can locate the nearest Hydration Stations, including the Fire Department, Police Department, and Customer Service Center, by visiting the interactive map at AZMag.gov/HRN.

The sound of freedom from the jets over Luke Air Force Base is part of daily life here in El Mirage. Today, we pause to remember that our freedoms exist because brave heroes gave everything to protect them.

This Memorial Day, we honor their sacrifice and say: thank you for your service, today and always.

☀️ Memorial Day Weekend Reminder: Water Safety Comes First ☀️

As temperatures rise and families head to the pool, lake, or splash pad this Memorial Day weekend, remember: a few seconds can make all the difference.

Active adult supervision is one of the most important ways to keep children safe around water.

💧 Water Safety Tips:
• Always keep children within arm’s reach near water
• Designate a “Water Watcher” with no distractions
• Wear and use appropriate water safety gear
• Learn CPR and emergency response basics

🧡 Summer in El Mirage is what memories are made of: late nights, good friends, and good times. Keep it that way.

If you are heading out for Memorial weekend, make a simple plan:
✅ Designate a driver
✅ Download a rideshare app
✅ Have someone you trust on speed dial

Let’s look out for one another, and let's all get home safe. 🚫🚗

🏊 What’s one of the best things you can do for your child this summer? Sign them up for swim lessons. Swim lessons reduce the risk of drowning among children by up to 88%. Yet many children in our community don't have access to formal instruction.

That’s why the YMCA and the City of El Mirage have partnered together to offer El Mirage residents exclusive membership pricing and program discounts! Financial assistance may be available; call to ask.

The Northwest Valley YMCA is offering affordable group swim lessons starting at just $25 for four lessons.

Kids don't always know when they're thirsty, let’s remind them to stay hydrated!

During extreme heat, children are especially vulnerable to dehydration. Keep them safe this summer:

• Offer water every 20 minutes during outdoor play
• Limit outdoor time between 10am and 6pm
• Watch for signs of dehydration: dry mouth, no tears, or unusual tiredness
• Have them wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat

Let's keep our kids healthy and happy this summer, El Mirage! ☀️💙
