CONGRATULATIONS TO THE AGENCY OF THE YEAR!!!!!

El Paso County Animal Welfare has received the award 'AGENCY OF THE YEAR 2023 from The Animal Control Report Podcast.
Agency Name: El Paso County Animal Welfare Department,

Nomination : Transforming Lives and Fostering a Brighter Future for Pets: El Paso County Animal Welfare Department In the vibrant city of El Paso, Texas, the El Paso County Animal Welfare Department has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to enhancing the lives of animals and their human companions. A recent and noteworthy endeavor involves the conversion of an 8,000 square foot portable building, once a VA mobile clinic, into a vital asset now owned by the County's Animal Welfare Department. This facility will soon house a groundbreaking pet wellness clinic, embodying the vision of providing essential services to pet owners across the county at little to no cost. Thanks to the collective efforts of county commissioners and a generous $1.3 million federal grant, this clinic, is poised to address critical needs within the community. The array of services to be offered, including spaying and neutering, microchipping, flea, and tick preventatives, and more, reflects a proactive approach to curbing the influx of stray animals. This initiative not only aims to alleviate some of the burdens on the Animal Services Shelter but also to foster a culture of responsible pet ownership within the community. Furthermore, the clinic serves a dual purpose, aiming to tackle the nationwide shortage of veterinarians. The department has collaborated with veterinarian graduates at the UACJ These veterinarian graduates will actively participate in the clinic. Upon graduation from the AVMA Foreign Veterinarian program, these veterinarian residents now licensed doctors in the US, will sign a three-year contract with the county, during which the county will support them in obtaining the specific licenses required to practice in Texas. Director Combs and her team recognized the barriers faced by these talented graduates, such as the financial hurdles associated with the certification programs and the necessity of demonstrating proficiency in English. With visionary foresight, they advocated for support from the county to assist these aspiring veterinarians. The department's dedication to bridging this gap and leveraging the valuable skill set of these graduates sets a powerful example for the community and highlights their commitment to animal welfare at a broader scale. The planned opening of the clinic represents a milestone in the El Paso County Animal Welfare Department's ongoing mission to revolutionize animal care and welfare. The clinic's multifaceted approach, addressing financial barriers for pet owners and contributing to the education and growth of future veterinarians, showcases the department's innovative thinking and unwavering determination to make a lasting impact on animal welfare within the county. In conclusion, the El Paso County Animal Welfare Department exemplifies vision, and dedication in the realm of animal care. Their transformative initiatives, particularly the establishment of the pet wellness clinic and the collaboration with aspiring veterinarians, stand as a beacon of hope for the entire community. Through their efforts, they are not only addressing the immediate needs of animals and pet owners but also actively shaping a better and brighter future for animals and humans alike.

Hosting Free Microchipping

The City of El Paso Animal Services Department, in collaboration with its Resource Rover Team, is hosting a series of free microchip clinics as part of the “Straylight Savings” initiative.

1900 Lee Trevino Dr.

WHEN: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14

WHEN: 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28
WHERE: Socorro Clinic
9068 Socorro Rd.

The initiative is an effort to raise awareness about the importance of microchipping pets and keeping their contact information up to date.
Just as residents are reminded to check their smoke detectors’ batteries during Daylight Savings, “Straylight Savings” encourages pet owners in our community to review all safety measures to ensure the well-being and security of their pets.
The free monthly microchipping events are open to all and have no limit on the number of pets that can benefit from this service. For eligibility, pets should be at least six weeks old, dogs must be on a leash, and cats must be securely placed in carriers.
How to Update Your Pet’s Microchip
First, obtain your pet's microchip number, which you can do by visiting your veterinarian or any El Paso Fire Department station for a quick scan. Then, identify the chip's manufacturer by entering the number at PetMicrochipLookup.org. This will reveal the manufacturer and guide you to where you can register or update the contact details. For added security, consider adding your pet's microchip data to the FoundAnimals.org and PetcoLoveLost.org database for free.
Need a Microchip?
If your pet isn't microchipped, visit the El Paso Animal Services' calendar for upcoming free microchip clinics or visit your veterinarian to get a microchip which typically cost about $25.
