Together.

“It’s up to all of us to ensure our country lives up to the ideals of a free and equal society, and there will be much that we will need to do in the coming months – as individuals and as a campus community.” – Heather Wilson, UTEP President

UTEP has a more than 100-year history of breaking down barriers, and this fund, created in response to the tragic death of George Floyd, will support diversity, inclusion and equity programming on campus. Our goal is to address issues on racial injustice, police brutality, criminal justice reform, Black immigration, economic injustice, LGBTQIA+ and human rights, environmental injustice, access to healthcare, access to quality education, voting rights, suppression and more.

Dr. Scott Hagan, President of North Central University, announced the creation of the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship at the beginning of the ceremony honoring Mr. Floyd’s life on June 4, 2020. He challenged other university presidents to create a similar fund in his honor.

UTEP accepted the challenge because good organizations always try to do better. We will remain true to our legacy by ensuring our students and our community have the opportunity to work together to continue to break down barriers and achieve justice and equality for all.

UTEP Alumni Association

Dear UTEP Alumni,

Over the last week, our country has been presented with many challenges: the injustice of George Floyd’s death at the hands of those sworn to protect him, the various forms of protest (violent and non-violent) as a result, and the on-going coronavirus pandemic. Events such as these have both a historic and a traumatic impact on society.

As an organization, the UTEP Alumni Association cannot remain silent. Silence regarding race and oppression breeds inaction, indifference and ignorance.

The UTEP Alumni Association echoes the sentiments of UTEP President Heather Wilson. We need to continue the University’s legacy of breaking down barriers. (https://www.utep.edu/newsfeed/campus/statement-from-utep-president-heather-wilson.html).

UTEP has been a higher education leader in inclusivity and diversity at both the state and national levels throughout its more than 100-year history. And like the city it serves, UTEP is proud to be among the first to integrate classrooms in the Southwest.

The UTEP Alumni Association stands for and respects the rights of all, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Our more than 120,000-member Miner family comes from all races, ethnicities, and genders. We are at our best when we are united and inclusive. We are stronger together.

The UTEP Alumni Association will continue to work tirelessly to end racism in all forms and make equality a reality and not a dream.

Students Today. Alumni Tomorrow. Miners Forever.

Sincerely yours,

Laura Biggs
President

You can participate as a virtual attendee or by submitting a video, photo, or words of encouragement to 2020utepalumnivirtualreunion.questionpro.com. A message from UTEP President Heather Wilson:

As you are probably aware, both the State of Texas and City of El Paso stay at home orders expire today, April 30. Starting tomorrow, a phased reopening of businesses and services will begin.

Other than essential employees, all UTEP faculty and staff will continue to work remotely for now. UTEP employees should not return to campus on May 1.

The University’s Recovery Plan Task Force, led by Graduate School Dean Stephen Crites, began meeting this week to help us plan to safely reopen the campus. There are many factors to consider, and with students finishing this semester by distance, we have time to get this right.

The health and safety of students, faculty and staff is our top priority, followed closely by our responsibility to help our students continue their educational progress.

For now, keep working from home. We’ll get information to everyone on how we are going to restart safely.
