Republican Liberty Caucus State Chair James Peinado emphasized the seriousness of the issue, stating, “Texans should never have to trade their freedom for flawed technology. These mass surveillance systems create government tracking networks that violate the spirit of the Fourth Amendment and put innocent people at risk. If we do not act now, these systems will become permanent fixtures in everyday life across Texas.”
Civil liberties organizations nationwide have raised similar alarms, warning that networked camera systems allow retrospective searches across jurisdictions with little or no judicial oversight.
Call for Legislative Action
The Republican Liberty Caucus of Texas is urging the Texas Legislature to enact stronger protections for personal data and to ban mass surveillance equipment and programs, including automated license plate readers. The organization calls for strict warrant requirements, independent accuracy audits, transparency in data sharing, accountability for wrongful stops, and prohibitions on mass surveillance networks operated by government or corporate entities.
The rapid expansion of Flock Safety cameras, Axon surveillance platforms, and other automated public monitoring systems represents a profound threat to constitutional liberties and the privacy rights of ordinary Americans.
