The NCO Leadership Center of Excellence (NCOLCoE) and Sergeants Major Academy (SGM-A) is acknowledged by military and civilian organizations as the world's premiere institution for the education of noncommissioned officers. It is accredited as an academic Institution of Excellence, and is a direct reporting unit to Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC). The NCOLCoE and SGM-A is headed by a three-star level nominative command sergeant major and supported by a world-class staff and faculty. NCOLCoE creates all curricula for each level of the Army Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development System (NCOPDS), and plays a key role in the education of all enlisted leaders from corporal to command sergeant major in the active Army, Army Reserve and Army National Guard. It also trains NCOs of our sister services and global allies. The U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy was founded in July 1972 and graduated its first students in 1973. In March 2020 the institution became the NCO Leadership Center of Excellence. The SGM-A is a part of the CoE. Since its humble beginnings, the institution now tou8ches more than 390,000 annually from various NCOPDS courses, and continually adapts to meet the needs of our nation's defense. Did you know?
By taking their solemn oaths of service, Army professionals voluntarily incur an extraordinary moral obligation to live by and uphold the Army ethic, including Army Values, in their decisions and actions, in all aspects of life. It is their responsibility to embrace a shared identity as trusted Army professionals. As such, they assume complementary roles. As honorable servants in defense of the Constitution, they are professionals of character. As Army experts, they are competent professionals. As responsible stewards of the Army profession, they are committed and accountable to each other, the profession, and the American people. When Army professionals return to society, they embrace the concept of Soldiers for Life, and continue to be moral-ethical exemplars for their families and communities, and contribute to the well-being
of the United States of America. #thearmyprofession U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command U.S. Army Combined Arms Center Army University

#NationalAmericanIndianHeritageMonth

This month marks the 70th anniversary of Cpl. Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr.’s fight-to-the-death valor in the Korean War. Coincidentally, this anniversary of Red Cloud's death comes during #NationalNativeAmericanHeritageMonth, observed annually in November.

On the night of Nov. 5, 1950, Red Cloud, a Native American of the Ho-Chunk, or Winnebago tribe, was on a ridge guarding his company command post when he was surprised by a coordinated assault of Chinese forces. He sounded the alarm as the enemy charged from a brush-covered area less than 100' from him. Springing up, he delivered devastating point-blank automatic rifle fire into the advancing enemy. His accurate and intense fire slowed the assault and gained time for the company to consolidate its defense.

With utter fearlessness, he maintained his firing position until being severely wounded by enemy fire. Refusing assistance, he pulled himself to his feet, wrapped his arm around a tree and continued his deadly fire until he was fatally wounded. His company found him the next morning, surrounded by dead Chinese troops. His “dauntless courage and gallant self-sacrifice” stopped the enemy from overrunning his company's position and gained time for reorganization and evacuation of the wounded.

In April 1951, Gen. Omar Bradley, then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, presented Red Cloud's posthumous Medal of Honor to his mother, Lillian “Nellie” Red Cloud.

Our Story

On 22 June 2018 the Sergeants Major Academy effectively changed its name to the NCO Leadership Center of Excellence (NCOL COE). Likewise, the URL to our website has been changed to http://ncolcoe.armylive.dodlive.mil/

The U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy was founded in July 1972, as a special preparation source for the Army's senior enlisted leaders. Throughout its more than 46-year history, the Academy has taken on additional missions in the name of Noncommissioned Officer Professional Military Education. Today, with more than 24 missions under its roof, a need arose to better organize the institution to manage these missions and to refocus the Academy's efforts towards the Sergeants Major Course. On June 22, The NCO Leadership Center of Excellence officially stood up and assumed the responsibilities of the NCO Professional Development System, becoming the premier institution driving innovative development for enlisted leaders, constantly focused on readiness. The USASMA is a part of that system and will continue to lead all efforts concerning the Sergeants Major Course assisting the NCOL CoE in developing, integrating and delivering education and training readiness.

The NCO Leadership Center of Excellence (formerly the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy) is acknowledged by military and civilian organizations as the world's premiere institution for the education of noncommissioned officers. It is an accredited academic institution, and is a aligned under Army University and the Combined Arms Command, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, with additional reporting to Training and Doctrine Command, Fort Eustis, Virginia. The NCOL CoE drives change for Noncommissioned Officer and Enlisted Soldier education by providing professional military education that develops enlisted leaders to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world; and develops leaders who are fit, disciplined, and well educated. The NCOL CoE also trains the NCOs of our sister services and global allies.
