This little guy is being called “Louie”. He was found as a stray on 24 January. He was an intact male with no collar or chip. He’s been neutered, groomed, vaccinated, chipped, and is heading to a rescue. Adoptions are free the month of January, so be sure to look twice at the scared, dirty, matted, and skinny dogs. They need saving and they make the most amazing transformations.

Today is #ChangeAPetsLifeDay! Hazel's life sure was changed when she found her forever family. She was in and out of the shelter a couple times because she just wasn't finding the right fit. But when the right family, including a new doggo brother, came along—it was magic, and has been magic ever since!

Meet “Balto”! He’s a young poodle mix that came in on 17 January. He’s an intact male and was wearing a sweater that had become tangled in his legs, matting, and burrs so had to be cut off. He had no collar or chip. He had so many burrs all over his body that he didn’t want to move, but once they were removed, he loosened up and was much happier. He also holds his bladder in the kennel so he may be potty trained. He didn’t react to the cats we passed either. Come check him out!

Thank you to Miss El Paso America and Miss El Paso America Teen for stopping by to visit with our shelter pets and drop off donations to help our lifesaving programs! It was only appropriate to introduce our doggy of the day, Crystal, to them as she was also wearing a crown (a crown-patterned collar)! She sure loved the extra attention, and of course her new squeaky toy.

We are always in need of donations. Find out how you can help on our website: https://elpasoanimalservices.org/how-you-can-help/donate/

Cat Curtain Workshop

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Cat Curtain Workshop last weekend! We had an AMAZING turnout, and our volunteer office was filled with animal lovers from all over our community and the whirring of sewing machines.

With so many cat kennels in our shelter though, we weren't quite able to finish. If you couldn't join us for this workshop, but want to still help, we could always use extra hands to sew some curtains from home! If you're interested in lending a helping (sewing) hand, email our Outreach program at [email protected]—maybe host a sewing party of your own!

Thank you, El Paso!

It's #FosterFriday, and we have a total cutie patootie! He's a parvo survivor, and what better way to celebrate than by finding him a forever home! Here's what Hugo's foster says about him:

This handsome guy is a parvo survivor and he’s approximately six months old. He's enjoying life but would love to find his forever home. Hugo is a confident boy that is just happy to be alive!

Likes- food and treats (pretty much anything), strong chew toys, pulling stuffing out of not-so-strong stuffed animals, playing exuberantly with his four-legged foster sister, car rides, snuggling with his people on the couch, and chasing cats (cats aren’t as excited about this pastime).

Dislikes- empty food bowls, parvo treatments (all done with those!), baths, nail trims, and cat claws.

Based on his likes and dislikes he would do best in a home that has an active person to hang out with, and a playful pup to play with.

If you're interested in adding Hugo to your family, reach out to our Foster team at [email protected].

PUPDATE: ADOPTED!! This pup came in on 10 January. She had part of a Harley Davidson collar stuck in her hair but no other signs of ownership: no tag and no chip. She’s a senior girl, probably in or close to the double digits age-wise and was spectacular on the grooming table. She’s about 15 pounds and would make someone a very nice, calm companion. She walked well on a leash and would like a peaceful home to call her own. Come check her out!

Looking for a female Scottish terrier
Found a puppy dog at Cancellare street upper valley westside Please spread the voice He is very nervous
January 20, 2020 10711 Cook Street Denver, CO 80233 RE: Robbie, AKA Sweety, #43596594 To Whom It May Concern: My name is Joyce Beck and I live in Denver, Colorado. I grew up in El Paso, TX. I visited El Paso, Texas on January 7-12 to probate my mother’s will. My mother died on December 7, 2019. I am 65 years old and recently had a left hip replacement. The reason for this correspondence is that my little Chihuahua dog, Robbie, ran off on December 10th. I could not catch him due to my recent hip surgery. Though we looked for him around the neighborhood, Northeast El Paso, we could not find him. I went to Animal Services on January 11th but he was not picked up yet. He was picked up on January 12; however, I was already on my way back to Denver. I have sent emails and left voice messages to Animal Services and to date I have not received an answer to my emails or to my voice messages. However, my brother, James Jiron, went to the shelter to retrieve Robbie and he was told by the Director, Paula Powell, that Robbie was chipped, listed as stolen, and the he/she wants him back. I showed proof that I have had Robbie for over five years. I bought him from a woman in Denver who needed money; I paid $350.00 for him. I have shot records and photographs proving how long I have had Robbie in my possession. However, the shelter will not release him to me. Ms. Powell told my brother that the person who is claiming Robbie wants him back and he/she has an infinite time to get him. In the meantime, my dog is sitting in a shelter when he can be home. Robbie is a companion for my brain damaged long-haired Chihuahua and we desperately need him home. Please help me get my dog back. Sincerely, Joyce Beck
AGAIN tried to adopt this female from Animal services where she ended UP AT on Saturday....spoke to Valentin at AS on Sunday (next day) informed me there is already a pending adoption??? are rules different for each DOG...they had a previous Pomeranian and TOLD ME THEY could not show until 3/4 days to give owners time to claim. JUST a day later the chihuahua has a PENDING adoption...how is that...??!!! if their RULES were different before....THIS IS THE THIRD attempt i have made to adopt a pet at Aminal Services....Have made two trips with no success NOW they say this little girl is already on Hold...are employees GIVEN first shot at them....NOT FAIR....have spoken to supervisor with NO results.
This is the blood bath at this facility and dead kittens. What is wrong with these people! These animals are suppose to be protected. Poor babies!
What and the hell is wrong with you people!!! These poor animals. Not acceptable!!!!
Earlier this month, PETA released photographs given to them by a whistleblower at the El Paso, TX, pound. The photographs show dogs being mauled by other dogs, one dead puppy covered in blood with one forelimb gnawed completely to the bone and the other partially eaten. (To view that photograph: http://bit.ly/2O1f2G5 but warning: it is very graphic and very disturbing.) In a letter to the City of El Paso, PETA — which itself kills thousands of animals every year without ever trying to find them homes and which has publicly defended shelters with similarly cruel conditions in the past — called for a criminal investigation in this case. A spokesman for the El Paso Police Department subsequently indicated that their investigation found no “criminal wrongdoing.” In my original article about this tragedy, I reported that this was not the first time dogs died at the El Paso pound due to neglectful conditions and that the situation called for both reform to prevent future deaths and accountability, including the termination of the director. By contrast, PETA was exploiting the tragedy in a bid to further harm animals. They wanted more animals killed:http://bit.ly/2pw46Xq. I also noted in that article that I had requested a copy of the police report under the Texas Public Records Act and would provide an update on the matter once it was received. I have since attained a copy of the report and found three things of note. First, the officer tried to speak to the reporting party at PETA, who failed or refused to provide any additional information. Second, the officer spoke to another police officer who was previously assigned to the shelter but who did not have personal knowledge of the facts surrounding the particular dogs who were injured and killed. That officer instead gave a positive, but generalized, character reference of dubious value to the instant case. Third, the investigating officer noted he spoke to the pound director, but did not report any of her statements relative to the injuries and deaths of the particular dogs. Instead, she is said to have stated that the conditions which led to the dog injuries and deaths “were addressed.” In other words, she did not appear to dispute the authenticity of the photographs, the conditions that gave rise to the case, or the fact that dogs were both injured and killed because of conditions. (I have requested a copy of the interview, which was taped, and will provide an update when it is received if it sheds any useful information.) There was nothing in the police report which would alter my original conclusion: we must reform cruel pounds, including firing those responsible. At the same time, we must challenge and hold PETA accountable which is exploiting the tragedy to promote their own sordid and nefarious agenda that would perpetuate a system that visits upon defenseless animals even more death. Reforming sordid practices at the El Paso pound — which has allowed dogs to die on multiple occasions — and constraining PETA’s dark agenda to see more of them intentionally killed go hand in hand. In my view, they are two sides of the same, abusive coin. The police report is here: http://bit.ly/2pyVWOb. The original article, including links to some of the photographs, are here: http://bit.ly/2pw46Xq.
Why do you animal control officers don't help when my neighbor's pitbulls keep coming into my back yard and attacking my dogs? When do my dogs life matter
PETA has received disturbing reports, including photographs and news reports, alleging that animals are being cruelly warehoused and are dying violently and painfully at the El Paso Animal Services Center. Last winter, at least four dogs reportedly died during extremely low temperatures after being moved to outdoor kennels and a barn, which were built by the city's shelter in an attempt to "save more lives." ..demand the immediate implementation of best practices and policies at the facility to protect lost, homeless, and abused animals who rely on the shelter to keep them safe. DO YOUR JOBS AND KEEP ANIMALS SAFE, THIS IS ABUSE AND HORRIFIC
