Merry Christmas and a Happy New year from Rebuilding Together El Paso Team!
As a young girl I was taught to be “nice.”
The word nice was used a lot:
“Be a nice girl Barbara. People like nice girls. Niceness will get you everything.
Nice girls don’t take other kids toys.”
You get the idea.
So I grew up thinking “being nice” was the way to a successful, happy.
Say yes to people so they will like you.
Don’t make others mad.
If someone is not nice to you it must be your fault.
You’re a bad girl if your not nice.
I was raised Catholic so God and being a nice girl went together very, very often..
I thought if I wasn’t nice God would disapprove of me and I would surely go to hell.
I’ve spent decades in therapy unlearning that I always have to be nice, and substituting “being nice” with:
“be kind, take extraordinary care of yourself, don’t be a door mat, you matter, not all people will like you and it’s perfectly okay, value your safety and presence in life, and you are the most important person to please, never mind the rest, wish them well and keep on walking.”
I address this to girls because this is how so many of us were raised and continue to be taught.
I have 3 brothers and I never remember my mother or father telling my brothers to “be nice.”
As an adult woman I have rarely heard a man use the word nice.
So loves, let’s begin teaching girls to prioritize being safe, kind, using their powerful voices, and taking extraordinary care of themselves because they matter. 💚
I’m not sure what nice actually means or how we would translate that in life, but I do know what kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness, being present, and love means and how to live by these virtues. 💫

You are instrumental to RTEP, the organization and its programs. As we are approaching the end of the year, we want to thank you for your support and participation. Whether you serve as a volunteer, a SHEBuilder, a donor, or simply an interested follower on our social media, we are grateful for you. If you are not following us on Facebook you can use this link to visit out page. You will witness a flurry of activity, even as we come to the end of a busy year. There are many examples of RTEP making a difference in the community, the following are important highlights we want you to share with you.
1.Our falls prevention program. How devastating it is when an elderly person falls in her or his bathroom. We could verify that in 2021, all falls were eliminated of 78 homeowners who had cumulatively fallen 180 times in the year before we installed grab bars or converted their tub into a shower.
2.Our SHEBuilds program. We welcomed over 100 independent women who were trained in home repair skills.
3.Above all we helped over 100 homeowners and their families to stay safe and healthy in their home.
Thank you for your support!
